VLC Player - Sound distortion when playing AVI or MP4 videos

    Hoping somebody can help.
Been using VLC Player for years but lately the sound is getting really distorted in pretty much any video, it occurs when the sounds get quite loud.
For example when watching a blockbuster movie from my hdd when the sound is reaching a particularly loud point, the sound coming from my speakers gets terribly raspy and grating.
Overall i'd also say the sound is generally quite "tinny".

I makes me revert to using Windows Media Player.
When i play the same movie in WMP it sounds just fine.

So I suppose this means it's a codec issue.

    I use Windows 7 64bit.
    VLC Player 2.0.6
I've tried downloading a "VLC.CODEC.PACK.v2.0.5.1" but no joy.

Any advice about getting VLC to work better?

What level is the sound set to inside VLC itself?
When it's a good bit over 100% the sound is pretty horrible.
