Fitting a Tyre

Is there a trick to this? I can never get the bead to sit right on the rim, part of the tyre sits too far in on the rim, usually the opposite side from the valve.

Is the tyre one with wire or a folding one? I find that folding ones can be awkward just out of the box, but are easier to fit and remove later on.
I always start at the valve and work away on either side until I end up opposite the valve for the final push (tyre logo in line with the valve, of course)
It doesn't matter too much where the tyre sits in the rim at this stage as pumping the tyre will push the edge into the proper place.
