Nintendo 3DS Wifi Connection Problems

I recently bought a 3DS for my son and no matter what I try I cannot get it connected to the internet. I have done all the in house checks modem WEP key etc and all is well. I have followed advice from another forum on entering strings but this has failed. Youtube has demonstrations but there seems to be different editions of the 3DS.

Has anyone had this problem and gotten over it?

Turn off security on your router. If it starts working you know the problem is WEP or WPA or whatever you use. Otherwise, you're worrying about the wrong link in the comms chain

I'm on Eircom, I've visited other towns and hosted 2 simultaneous visitors without an issue (other than the horrendous save times, but that's Animal Crossing's fault :)

I had problems visiting another town, but it turns out that that might be down to the town I was visiting rather than me.

How old is your wireless router? I used to have fierce problems on my old (old? Antique!) 802.11a/b one but that was a bandwidth issue between my router and my wireless device.
