Silage or Round bale

Not a farmer myself, just wondering.

A lot of lads gone back to doing silage round here this year instead of round bale ?

Haven't seen that for a good few years.

Silage seems to be back in fashion again, and the silage trailers are getting dusted down.

What's the main reasons, I take it its related to the shortage of grass earlier in the year ?

Pit silage is usually cheaper than baled silage. Another reason may be that farmers made bales in the past knowing it would be easier to sell excess bales rather than excess pit silage and they probably know that they will not have excess to sell next year.

The bales are silage too. But pit is cheaper.

Appreciate that, I should have called it pit silage vs black bale silage. My bad.

Just wondering why pit silage had practically gone out of fashion round here for the last few years, now suddenly it's all pit again this year and no bales.
