    http://www.westmeathindependent.ie/news/roundup/articles/2013/06/06/4016206-rumours-of-garda-training-move-to-athlone-quashed-/

Over the last week, rumours have circulated locally that the Gardai training centre in Templemore may close and relocate to Custume Barracks in Athlone.
There was also speculation that that all but one company of the Defence Forces currently based in Athlone could be relocated to Galway within the next year which. if true, would result in a significant reduction of staff based in Costume Barracks. The Westmeath Independent contacted the Department of Defence in relation to both of these points but a spokesperson poured cold water on the speculation. “I have made enquiries and there is no knowledge of such a proposal in relation to either of your enquires,” said Áine Fitzpatrick of the Department’s press office.

This is one of the more bizarre rumours on the go at the moment. If true,
it would be a radical reshaping of the military map of Ireland with virtuall no troops in the midlands from the time a few years ago there were substantial numbers.

It would also be extremely unfair on all the troops moved from Dublin to Athlone a few months ago to be moved again to Galway.
    Seems like an unlikely rumour

Not a chance. Gazillions were pumped into Templemore in 1992 to turn it into a high standard 3rd level training facility. Even more was thrown at it in 2003 to create sufficient accommodation for about 1000 students.

Westmeathers clutching straws again. Custume is quite safe.

Not to mention that the DF is trying to stop having Unit's split between different barracks, so wouldn't be keen on splitting a Unit between Galway and Athlone.

Between all the Units there now, there must be the guts of a thousand troops in Athlone. The barracks in galway would never accomodate them all.

It would make more sense to move the Garda College to Galway and move some troops to Athlone. USAC is almost deserted and the Reserve HQ is winding down. THE GMIT is across the road in Renmore and could act as a link institution.

    No it wouldn't.

    Not at all in fact.

Past spending is of no interest to the government. Current and future expenditure is. Templemore is now a white elephant. There will never again be 1000 garda recruits in training. The nearest third level institution is in Limerick many miles away.
