EGR valve on Audi A4 1.9 TDI

Hi, I have a 2006 1.9 TDI Audi A4 with 82K miles, serviced regularly and running great until the other day when it started to lose power & chuck out black smoke.
Dropped it into Audi dealer and they've come back & said it was showing EGR valve fault. Said they've reset the valve and it's running fine now but they can't say how long it will last, could be days/months/years. They're recommendation is to replace the valve but it's coming in just under 500 euro so I'm wondering if I should replace or just see how it goes now?

I've read a bit online and it can be a common enough issue with the valves sticking and cleaning can sort it so wondering if that's likely what it was and maybe it will be OK now.
Don't want to throw 500 Euro at it if it's basically resolved now but at the same time I don't want to drive it away and risk doing any further damage if it's faulty and needs replacing.

Anyone any advise or experience on this?
should I replace or drive away & see how it goes?

    Thanks in advance

Get them to take it off and clean it. You'd be surprised how much crap can get caked into these valves!

How would it cost €500 to change egr valve?

    Edit: Sorry, meant including part.

Are they that dear on your car? I've an a3 2litre 2003 and the valve was €100, spurious.

Thanks for replies. I phoned garage last week and asked them if the 'reset' they said they did included cleaning the EGR valve, I was told it did. I was again told that the reset could resolve the issue for mere days or weeks/months/years. Based on that I decided to take my chances and try it out.
Collected the car and paid the diagnostics fee, drove about 1KM and problem still there. Very dangerous driving it at junctions, roundabaouts etc no idea if the power will be there to take off when you need it!
    Lots of black smoke.
Would that suggest that they did actually clean it. When I collected it the work slip attached to the receipt said 'reset' no mention of clean and a big bit in bold about how the customer was advised that new EGR valve is required. I had actually been told recommended but hey ho.

So I dropped it back in today for the replacement valve to be fitted but I really don't know if they did a whole lot with it last week. I find it hard to believe that it was fine again in their test driving after the 'reset' but I only got about 1KM out the road!

They are a main dealers and in fairness they came down quite significantly on the original quoted price, based on my service history apparently, they said Audi would contribute.
