    Judging from the propeller the engine was still under power when it hit. So not complete engine failure then although I would have thought shutting down the engine once under the canopy would be standard?

    Deploying one of these completely writes the aircraft off, or am I wrong in thinking that?

    No it doesn't, several have been rebuilt. Like any accident it depends on the severity of the damage.

    ha how big of a parachute would you need to fit one on a commercial jet ?

    some nervous flyers would be clamering on board that type of plane !

    They were researching them sometime ago however it was too large to be economical or effective to fly.

    And in true Daily Mail fashion they report the plane to be worth both £200,000 and £500,000! I suppose you turn a 2 upside down it does look like a 5 to someone of a Daily Mail journalist's I.Q.

    Either way, things could have turned out a lot worse.
