yeah i think it was supposed to be a film, based on his stand up show Hello Ladies (which is the name of the show), it might be a bit of fun, that is if he can keep ricky away long enough to write the whole series by himself,

Looking forward to this. I think SMerch was very good as the agent Darren Lamb in Extras, and his Stand Up routine (on which this show is based) was well received.

I don't see any trailer for it yet, HBO are certainly keeping it low-key for the moment.

"No need to bring up abortion ... until we need to" :)
Created by Stephen Merchant, Hello Ladies follows as a gawky, 6’ 7” Englishman searching for the woman of his dreams in Los Angeles. Half as charming – and twice as desperate – as he thinks he is, he’s obsessed with infiltrating the glamorous world of beautiful people, who won’t let him in. The comedy series is produced by HBO Originals is association with ABC Studios and stars Merchant, Christine Woods, Nate Torrence and Kevin Weisman.

Slightly longer trailer - Leeson Street in Dublin gets a brief passing mention.

Premieres on HBO on September 29. Apparently Sky Atlantic picked it up over here, no transmission date for them yet.

Are Gervais and him on a break?

    Anyone watch it yet?

    IGN review
While delivering a few laughs, Stephen Merchant's desperate and deplorable Stuart is enough to make you check your drink for roofies.

But I think I'll still give it a go

I enjoyed the first episode - if you are a fan of his stand up and his appearances in Extras, you will probably like this.

For anyone coming in cold it might take a bit of persuasion. There was some good dialogue and a nice bit of slapstick at the end. The supporting characters were bland enough but they might develop in future episodes.

I thought this was great, if hard to watch at times.

The pilot was decent. This could turn into a very watchable show

Watching this and really not warming to it. There's a lot of potential in the set up and some fun interaction between the characters but it all feels so forced and some of the humour mistakes lowest common gross out material for wit but I like Merchant and will most likely stay with this for the series to see if it develops into something other than a less interesting Curb Your Enthusiasm knock off.

This was shown on our screens tonight on Sky Atlantic....
First episode i have to say found it very good!
I can kinda see who the real genius behind the office was!
Merchant just looks funny anyway no matter what the line is !

Edit Title ( Stephen Merchant !)

Definitely more hits than misses with this show

    I'm finding it so-so.

I think Stephens characters main issue with finding love is that he is an awfull person.

Its pretty obvious he & his housemate will get together.

This finished in the States last night and quite strongly too.

Definitely my favourite new show of the season (although it didnt have much in the way of strong competition)

Was that the last episode? I watched all six previous episodes over the weekend, absolutely great series. I thought the last episode was brilliant too. I think having Merchant around on his own without Ricky (even though I'm a fan) is great and gives him a chance to kind of breath on his own. The supporting cast are great as well.

    That was only Ep 7.

    Next week is finale

I don't know.I wanted to like it but it's very hard to root for Stuart as he's such an unrelenting arsehole, a tighfisted flake and delusional to boot. I also don't really enjoy laughing at how hopeless he is. With the likes of Curb Your Enthusiasm it's easy enough to get behind Larry as he's often the least **** in a world of ***** and you never feel like you're supposed to pity him. I'm not sure how much longer they can spin out essentially the same story very week before they do the tediously inevitable and get him together with Jessica.

Watched the last episode the other night.
I'll be honest I hated the series at first but its not bad at all.
Last few episodes were very enjoyable.
    Hope it gets another season.

Catching up on this and really enjoying it. It's a nice change of pace to have a character who is so unlikeable. Pritchard is such a dick that you actively find yourself rooting for everyone but him. The pool party episode was just the most pathetic and cringeworthy thing I've seen since Curb ended.

Finished the series up and really enjoyed it. It took awhile to find it's legs and the early episodes did feel like a poor retread of Curb Your Enthusiasm but as the weeks passed it really did grow on me.

The wedding episode was by far the highlight of the series with the soup encounter being one of the funniest things I've ever seen, made all the more so due to the fact that I said pretty much the same thing to a childs parent a few months back.

What made the Wedding episode so special was the sweetness which raised it's head during the final scenes. Stuart carrying the cooler of barely touched food back to Wade was just a sweet moment and kinda answered all those questions I had about why they were friends.

The show has been at it's best during moments where Stuart and Jessica share a moment. They act like a real couple and it's a nice change of pace but what really makes these moments work is the chemistry between the actors and the fact that Merchant takes it down a notch during this scenes.

It's a real shame that they had Lucy Punch guest star in the episode and then gave her nothing to do. She's the perfect actress for the show and her Anne Frank scene was just brilliant.

The final episode was something of a mixed bag. It dialed back the comedy in favor of some melancholy and it really did work. Merchant hitting on women way out of his league is funny but you can't build a series on that and as such the show has gone from strength to strength as a result of focusing on the supporting cast though I'm still not sure just what role Kives is there to fill. Hopefully series 2 will see him get something to do as so far, he's been the most pointless character in years.

I'm going to keep it a lot simpler than Darko, just caught the last episode this week and I really enjoyed it, I thought Merchants character was great, the episode with the handy men was full of cringe and I knew he'd eventually burst at the wedding table.

    Cancelled, apparently.

    Shame, I enjoyed it.

Chortle says it will get a one-off episode to wrap it up.

A surprising cancellation it must be said.

How shows like this get chopped and 2 And A Half Men gets tens of millions of viewers is one of life's great mysteries

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Pity, but it was hardly ground breaking stuff. Family tree was pretty awful too.

    Raging, I really liked this.

In love with Christine Woods also and first Flash Forward got cancelled and now this.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians is in season 9 and Mrs Browns Boys is watched by millions, what is wrong with the world.

The cancelation is no surprise. The show ended well but it took far too long to find its feet. The first number of episodes played like a watered down Curb Your Enthuaism. It was obvious what Merchant was trying to achieve but for far too long the show was little more than him trying to hit on attractive women while the supporting cast were given little to do. It was only during the final two episodes that everything clicked into place and it felt like a well rounded show that had a real chance of evolving into something a little special.

I see 'Hello Ladies' is getting a send off.

Hello Ladies: The Movie comes to HBO in late November

He got lucky there. The show was shíte. The one time I'd have loved them to do a move sendoff was a show from a few years ago called Bored To Death on HBO. It was fantastic and didn't deserve to die prematurely like it did. Even though it had 2-3 seasons, there was plenty of life still left in it.

Glad I checked this thread earlier, I watched the wrap up and I thought it was really good! Stewart as a sympathetic character worked so well . :)
