I have seen a phone in a junk mail catalogue from H&rvey N*orman- 16 quid. It's sim free cheapo phone. Will it work in the US? Looking for something that will, was thinking of getting 2 and then some cheap/free sim cards over there.

    Thanks

Nope. Try to get a quad-band GSM phone, at least.

Also, there's a handy tool on GSMArena that tells you what frequencies are used in different countries

Hmm, maybe I will buy a cheapo in Walmart or something. What about the SAmsung Galaxy range on any Irish network provider...will they work in the US? Thanks

You'd probably have to look up each Galaxy model with the tool on GSMArena, there are an awful lot of them. As far as I know, they're all quadband GSM so basic calling and texting shouldn't be a problem.

Another thing to factor in is that any phone you get from one of the networks here will be locked, so you may want to buy sim-free. (amazon.co.uk, expansys.ie etc)

Don't forget that depending on where you go, you may not even end up on a GSM network.
