RD Brushing Spokes

My RD is brushing the spokes when in the easiest gear. What do I need to fettle in order that it doesn't do this when in the easiest gear? I'm a klutz with gear adjustments.

Limit screw or else the derailleur hanger is out of whack I would say.

I was fiddling with the barrel adjuster the other day to try and get a new wheel shifting correctly, so I'm hopeful that the hanger is fine. I have the original wheels on now and I hadn't noticed the problem before I changed to the new wheels. Still possible it was brushing though. I don't use that gear too much but I have a feeling it will be needed for the Evil on Sat.

Barrel Adjuster won't do it, it's the limit screws that you need to adjust (the L one governs the inner most limit.) Push the derailleur as far over as it'll go, (so it hits the spokes), and adjust screw till the jockey wheels line up with your 28 tooth (or whatever your biggest is)

    Low limit screw.

Park tools is very good on it.

You want range as small as possible and still be able to use all gears.

Adjusting tension probably allowed rd to move inwards a tad more.

Print of park tools guidance and have in front of you. Plant a tree afterwards to make yourself feel better. ...

Sheldon Brown and his infinite bicycley wisdom has an entire article based on the subject.

    http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html
The low gear limit stop (usually marked by the letter "L") stops the derailer from shifting past the largest sprocket and throwing the chain into the spokes. If it is too loose, the derailer can overshift into the spokes, with disastrous results. If it is too tight, it will be difficult or impossible to shift down to the largest rear sprocket.

Nice video on indexing too and how to set the limits. It's handy stuff....

This video explains the entire operation nicely.

Thanks chaps, I have about a couple mill in distance now and shifting seems good for the full range in both rings.

Good to hear. Last thing you want is for your chain to come off the block and eat some spokes :D

Make sure it's right on outboard side to. No fun when chain gets wedged in between drops and smallest cog. Your more likely to be going fast and trying to go faster.
The problem you had might only damage wheel

Or the derailleur to catch on a spoke, wrap itself around the wheel and mangle itself and the wheel. It does happen.

In the spirit of the Evil you should limit yourself to the outermost cog and outermost chainring for the day, making derailleur fiddling unnecessary.
