Vectra B 2.0Di Smoke Test Fail on NCT

    Hi there,

My 00 Vectra B 2.0DTL failed the smoke test (passed everything else) recently returning a reading of 9.96/m versus the spec of 3.0/m.
I had been driving for prior 2 weeks with a half bottle of Dipethane in a full tank of diesel and revving her hard to the redline in low gears to clear her out but she was still 3 times the spec limit!
I took off the ERG valve in the inlet manifold yesterday to find it was caked in 200,000 miles of soot so i cleaned it and put it back in. i plan to remove the inlet manifold tomorrow and clean all that out as well so maybe that might help.
I was reading on the net that some people block off the EGR valve to give the engine more power so i have 2 questions:

    (1) If i disconnect the vacuum feed to the EGR valve leaving it in the closed position will this help reduce the some test level, i.e. the engine will not be pulling hot exhaust gas so will it produce less smoke?

    (2) If if disable the EGR as above and blank the vacuum pipe to it will i get a fault code ont he ECU. I'm thinking i won't cause there is no electrical feed and as long as there is a vacuum present in the line then it shoudl be ok but i'd like to know?

Any help you can provide on the above woudl be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    X20DTL
