A friend of mine wants to buy a 2.5 lwb transporter. He's looking at 2 at the moment a 2007 and 2008. There both very high spec both 174bhp versions. Only problem is there both dsg gearboxes which generally get good reviews. But what are they like in that transporter reliability wis ?Also the van would be towing a fairly big trailer abit of the time is that gearbox ok to tow ? Finally is that 2.5 transporter reliable generally? Thanks for the help.

I think that that age Transporter has a regular automatic with torque convertor, DSG only fitted in facelift model, in approx 2010. We have one with 180,000km and have no problems, often pulls 18' tri axle trailer. Some VW forums suggest changing transmission oil (mileages vary, but 100,000miles mentioned) but bottom cover has to be removed to do this. One thing to take note of, this is an 'intelligent' transmission and will behave according to driving style. I would re set transmission before test drive, ignition on - press accelerator to floor until you feel click from pedal - hold for 15 seconds - release pedal - igniton off. This re-sets to default setting and transmission 'learns' your driving style.

Thanks 911s that's great information. His main concern is about reliability and being able to pull a trailer the odd time. You could be right about them not being dsg he just said to me he thought they were and I thought no more of it tbh. Thanks again.

That's interesting... does that apply to most auto's in the VAG range? I just bought an 2005 auto A6. Should I be doing the same?
