Dealer is in business long time no mention of service history ? Mileage high if there's.no history if could be a bit cheaper

Make sure you get a very comprehensive warranty given the well documented timing chain problems with those engines. BTW the auto is much nicer in the 5 Series imo.

Looks a little tatty to me, and the reference to being taxed to 01/13 is strange. Have they really had it that long, or are they just poor with detail? Either way, I wouldn't be travelling far to view.

Poor add for a 16k car. No mention of history either, which is strange with that mileage. 117439 miles is about 24,000 miles a year, so possible a rep mobile. Not worth that money to me anyway.

make sure the swirl flaps have been removed from the intake manifold, and that there is a cast iron exhaust manifold on the car.

These are the two major problems with these 5 series.

I have one at the minute and have gone through all the problems they have.

Are the swirl flaps still an issue of the LCI model?
ive heard about the manifold problems, but ive only ever heard of them going on the E60 525d.

@ Irishder: Are you reffering to a 2004 530d as I noticed you where on the hunt for a manifold, if so the manifold issue was rectified and is not relevant to a 2007+ 520d

My old man has a 2009 Irishder and its a smashing long distance cruiser, Eats miles and will easily do 50 mpg on the motorway

Timing chains are the main prob Google N47 timing chain and loads on YouTube.if it rattles from a cold start and sounds rickety going up through the gears it needs replacing .engine out job so its expensive

Irishder. Yes I would, they are a beautiful car to drive. And very good on long hauls.

As soon as I fix my manifold issue im buying a 10 reg one.

Thanks for the replies and recommendations, mind made up definelty getting a 2008 onwards one, now just to find a well serviced, well looked after, lowish milage one for around 16000. Never actually drove one!!!

If it's like the E90 then the manifold was redesigned when they were upgraded with the N47 engine. Some people still get them removed for peace of mind though.

Thats going to be tough in my opinion, but the one in Kerry does go against what i say.
Maybe the colour hinders it. May be worth a viewing though, and i would imagine a straight sale of 16k be achieved on that one.

I'd rather go back a year, suck up the motor tax difference and get a better example.

You need to drive both the 163 and 177 and both manual and auto before making your mind up about anything.

4 pot diesel in a car of that size is going to be stressed and underpowered.

I would go for at least the 525. Post 08 model so you wouldn't be paying 3.0 tax for 2.5 performance. 6 pot is needed in any 5er imo. The 520 sounds so unrefined.

Also, manual? You must be crazy.

Well compared to a 535d then yes. I thought the same but having driven a 163bhp version it was well able keep up the pace but agree around refinement, nowhere near as refined as the bigger engines.

I was in lidl carpark the other day and heard a tractory startup + idle noise (almost as bad as my old golf daysul), turned around and it was a 520d e60

I think the noise alone doesnt suit the image of the car. Not comparing it to the 535d obviously (hey, 9.5-10 l/100km isnt for everyone), but the 525 would be the best mix of 6pot , refinement and economy imo.

Picked up a 2007 MSport Automatic (auto adds to value) with half the mileage, full BMW service history and a 12 month warranty a few months back for 15K

No dodgy timing chain - the only thing I did was remove the swirl flaps (2 hours labour)

Sure road tax is higher - but you are paying a premium for 2008 tax ... and the gap in tax is closing.

That dealer has a lot of low emission premium badged stock mostly imported at a young age. Seems to be their bread and butter. The forecourt isn't fancy, they are a main suzuki dealer though if that means anything.

I'd rather pay a little bit more for the BMW warranty on that engine if I was keeping it a few years. I also think an auto is essential in that class of car.

Also you have to worry about the spec of the car in other areas if the original owner didnt even spec an auto box.

Manual e60 diesel to me screams repmobile or lease car. Either of which are reasons to worry, for various levels.

There are folk who want manual's though. Pricing someone for a replacement to his E60 at the moment, and he point blank doesn't want the auto, even though it's free, has the same emissions as the manual, and works out cheaper to lease due to the higher resale of the Auto.

Been a while since I've driven a manual 5 Series, but from memory it's a pretty horrible, notchy manual box.
