Went to look at a car today, all seemed ok, but the seller said he was selling for a friend who moved abroad, he had the log book, and it was signed,, so unsure, the car was also missing thetax disc (said it was taxed though but will check it on motorcheck just want to check this out first) and the nct was a duplicate also.

If it smells of p1ss, just find another car. This story is trotted out all time by small time, non tax paying or warranty giving traders.
If they can't be honest over a simple detail like who owns the car (technically you're buying it off someone who possibly doesn't even have the right to sell) then any other stories they give you like new timing belt, never crashed etc can't be taken seriously.

Google the sellers phone number and see if any other ads pop up,

    Walk away.

Selling for someone else ...Dodgy (was it his brother in law by any chance)
Duplicate NCT .... Doesnt sound great either
    Missing tax disc....

All adds up to being not worth the hassle. Much better chance of buying a decent car if you buy off the actual owner, someone who has had it 2 or 3 years, buying at their own house etc. You can pretty much get an overall picture of the car ownership etc.
Buying off a dodgy salesman is a no no for me anyway

I wouldn't be too worried, hes prob a small time trader and never put the car in his name, this makes no difference to the condition of the car.
He could have taxed it online, if motorcheck says its taxed then again theres no real problem there provided he comes up with the disk. I sold a micra a few months ago and taxed it online and sold it the day after, just had to post the disk off to the new owner when it arrived.
As regards the nct being a duplicate again I wouldn't be too worried theres many reasons why the original could have been lost or damaged i.e children in the car, windscreen being replaced etc.

He should have been open about all this prior to you viewing the car. Only way I would consider buying it is with an email from the registered owner with a scanned copy of their passport confirming they own the car and the seller is selling on their behalf.

Car could have been traded in to a garage and they flogged it to current seller, registered owner may not have a clue it's for sale in this way.
