Basically i worked a paid trial in a local hotel at the start of April. After having to pester them since then they have finally decided they are going to actually pay me but have said i will have to be put through the system and pay emergency tax on it.
What i am wondering is does this mean i will have to get a p45 off them when i start work in another place or will it matter because it was only one shift?

Surely Petty Cash would be there for something like that?

You'd think that wouldn't you.Do a days work and get paid about 20euro after the emergency tax and have to go through the bother of explaining to the social welfare why i got taxed from a job when im not meant to have one.I won't be going for a trial anywhere again anyway

you need to go to the revenue and register if you dont you will be on emergency tax. they charge a certain rate for 1st month 2nd and 3rd

you will have to get a p45 off them if you begin work in a new company

And how would it effect the social welfare if they seen i was being taxed for a job?

If it was only a day or even a week and as it was only a trial I wouldn't worry about a p45. I would just use my last P45.

If it came to Social Welfare's attention that you took up paid work even on a trial basis it may not go down too well as you really should have made them aware of this before doing the trial.

Still not too late to let them know especially if it's going through the books now, and just say you didn't realise you should have cleared this with them first.

It could be the hotel was trying to avoid payment by trying to scare you off when saying it will have to go through the books.

Ye i know the social wouldnt be impressed but no point saying it now considering i worked the day at the start of April.Im beginning to think its not even worth getting paid off them.Could cause a lot of hassle for the sake of the 20 or 30 euro id be left with after tax. They tried to say to me it will cost them more to pay me then id actually get like i should feel guilty for them or something haha

Moving to Work/Jobs forum as this would be best suited to help with this

Getting paid won't be a hassle: Welfare are unlikely to find out, even if they did, just tell them it was a casual one-day job.

You should get paid, just on principle.

No need to register it with Revenue, since you've now left the job.

You will be charged emergency tax, but it will only be at 20%. And they will issue you a P45 when they pay you, not later on. It's really not a problem at all.

It took two months to get paid,i don't see them giving me the p45 straight away. Not the most professional of places

If they had any sense, they would set you up as a vendor and pay you as a contractor - that way they could just issue you a cheque, it still goes 'through the books', and you would be responsible for your own taxes etc. You could always sell it to SW if they found out as reimbursement of expenses for a training day rather than 'wages'.
