    Hi Folks,

Looking at buying a bike to get started doing a bit of mileage. Have an old mountain bike but find it heavy, tough on hills and not much free wheel after a decline. Mainly will use on country / secondary roads, approx 25-30km for now.
Interested in a second hand Giant Escape M0. Is this a good bike?
    Any advice????
    Thanks.

Giant are a reputable brand, escape is a decent bike, sensible spec and grand for shortish-medium length use like you described. Not ideal if you get into recreational cycling big-time as if you end up joining a club, taking up racing or doing longer spins you'll want to upgrade to a road bike.

Otherwise it's fine, if it's the right size, a fair price and in decent condition then buy it.

Great. Thanks for comments. One question I have is this bike has 1.5" wheels. I this too wide or ok for my usage?

I actually have this year's Giant Escape 3 for sale if you're anywhere near Cork. (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=84836896)

I bought it mainly as a commuter and did 40km rides on Sundays with it for quite a while. They're a grand bike for sure.

I do prefer my road bike however, and the general road bike geometry (hence selling). You mentioned hills, they are great on hills. The range of gearing is perfect from what I've dealt with.

Just realised that the giant escape MO differs from the giant escape not 'MO' in that the MO is essentially a mountain bike platform in that it has 26inch wheels, disc brakes (I think) and the 1.5inch tyres. It's still a quality bike from a reputable manufacturer and 1.5inch tyres aren't awful wide but if you're worried about that then maybe you're better off looking for something link the standard giant escape (with 700c wheels and the option for narrower tyres). The giant escape should be an improvement on an old mountain bike in terms of weight and over-all quality but it might not be a million miles away in terms of speed.

Apologies, I should have checked first to see what 'MO' stands for. I was originally under the impression all giant escapes were pretty much the same.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realise that there were so many options and spec. I think I'm gonna hold off on buying for now until I test a few different options. Might just try slick tyres on my current bike and see how much difference it makes until I decide.

    Thanks for advice.
