How wide are the gaps in supports in plasterboard in a house approx 30 years old ?

If you are talking about a stud wall they are generally anywhere from 14inches to 18inches centre to centre but they could be anything it would be very difficult to tell you exactly what they might be, an easy way to figure them out in your house and save you getting a stud finder or some such gadget would be to take off the skirting board and have a poke around at the bottom of the wall,you should be able to find the uprights without causing visible damage

Normally they are at 400mm or 16inches centres.
