Depends on the unit (how many are in the queue ahead of you etc) and the person (whether they have the right head for it...)

Shortest I know of is 9 months though they were an EFR beforehand. Generally it's round the 1.5-2yr mark round my parts

You don't need the EFR cert for a year since the last two courses. So in short, it's just a valid Foundation/CFR/EFR.

Usually around 2 years, but it really depends on how much contribution you give to the unit. The most valuable members will be nominated first.

Minimal; I get occasional work here and there, nothing that would support you full time. Don't let that put you off, an emt in OMAC is an extremely enjoyable position, you have the pick of the duties over the responders and are often put forward for instructor positions etc...

You sure? I've a copy of a circular in front of me.
    Application process:
The following criteria will apply to members applying for a place on an EMT course:
    1. Foundation certificate
    2. Current CFR certificate
    3. Current EFR certificate (Note: must be PHECC EFR certificate)

With regard to moving from volunteer to professional ambulances, my unit's seen a couple of EMTs move on to become paramedics with the NAS so it is possible.

Anybody can do that though. While the being an experienced EMT is good for applying to that position, you're not going to just move up instantly. You'll still have to apply and compete against everybody else.

    Hi, whats the difference between ;

    CFR (http://www.safetyireland.com/cardiac_first_response.htm)

    &

    EMT (http://www.emergencyservicestraining.ie/2010/05/03/emt-emergency-medical-technician/)

Do you have to have the CFR before applying for an EMT course

Simply put CFR is a simple course based at responder level that takes a few hours. Its cpr and AED usage.

EMT is a practitioner level course, takes a few weeks, has state exams and takes in all pre hospital care (Trauma & medical).

While CFR isnt required to do EMT course, id advise it, and a first aid course. Dont just jump into EMT without some expirience of what itll be like!

Yeah. The best EMT's are the ones that work their way up and get decent experience at the job. There are lots of terrible EMT's out there that havent a clue after some private EMT course provider promised them the sun and the stars and then they dont even teach them how to use a triangular bandage.

Have not heard good things about ESTI either.

There is a placement component as part of the course, you dont have to do one before the course.

I'm starting to volunteer with the Order of Malta in a few weeks from scratch, no first aid experience whatsoever, but a quick learner all the same. Is the first aid training intense?.... Does it involve much studying? I work full time and will try to give as many hours as possible to the volunteering aspect. I hear the first aid training is done initially over a one evening a week for 3 months, is this the norm?.. Would I learn enough in that time period to be decent at it?... Thanks for any advice and help as I really want this whole volunteering thing to go good! :-)

First of all take a deep breath.....relax

It's a voluntary organization run by volunteers just like you.

You give as much time as you can. Coming in with no experience is not a problem . You'll start off with foundation level FA. Once this is done you'll be going on dutys. But remember your unlikely to be on your own for a few years so being 'decent' is irrelevant. Learn from others . I'm there ten years and I'm stilllearning .

The unit will be grateful for another face and pair of hands but more importantly for now enjoy yourselfe
