Is this a good printer?

Its not the printer cost you need to worry about, its the inks!

Generally, its not a good idea o buy a printer with a single cartridge for colour - you end up throwing out a lot of ink, once one of the colours is exhausted.

I would suggest a minimum of 5 different cartridges or better. Ink is expensive - but if you use "compatible" cartridges (ones made by third parties) you can get some funny results.

Most printers are pretty good at the job of putting ink on paper so you probably won't be all that disappointed with the results of any printer unless you know what you're looking for. Like Adrian says the printer itself is heavily subsidised because the company is counting on the inks to make them most of their profits.

So in general the less you pay for the printer the more the ink will cost and visa versa. Be prepared to spend a bit more on the printer to save money in the long run.

It will say it in the specification.

Funny in a bad way - red may not be quite red etc.

I don't know Canon printers but a good Epson printer at about the same price is the Epson Expression Premium XP-600 Small-in-One® Printer
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Product.do?sku=C11CC47201&BV_UseBVCookie=yes. It takes 5 ink cartridges.

As Scumlord said - the cheap printers cost more in ink. They are only worthwhile if you do not intend to print much. If you print a lot then spend more on the printer.

As for buying in the USA watch out for the power supply - they are different in the USA. If the printer has a "Universal Power Supply" then you just have to change the plug. If it does not then you can't use it here.
