Struggling with weight

Not looking for any medical advice just any stories from people with similar problem.
I have been trying to lose weight for a long time now and I know its more of a mental issue. My weight gets me down and I think about it constantly. I do the obvious things like exercise and eat less but if I'd had bad day or feel down or angry I eat more and I'm back to square one. I find it very hard to be consistent and stick to weight loss plan. Anyone else struggling with this?

    Been there!

Started couch to 5k a while back. Day 1 I nearly died and stopped after one interval (60 second run) and went home, went out that evening and went a tiny bit further. On day 3 I have no idea what happened but I was able to complete it fully.

Exercise can be boring, but with something like couch to 5k you're always aiming towards goals and you will see results faster than walking.

I never planned to diet with it, it just happened naturally!...Not that I am a saint, was in terrible form after work yesterday and ate lots of junk food but I decided that would be my 'cheat day' and moved on!

Focusing on a diet makes you eat more, I find! You may also find it useful to write down how you feel when you're heading out and the dress doesn't fit right etc....and you think to yourself 'Whhhyyyy didn't I just start last month?'

    Good Luck!

lmahoney79: I always keep saying that if it was so easy to loose weight we would all be slim.
I am in the same situation though I know exactly where my problem lies. I am completely addicted to chocolate and not able to stop myself from eating it in one go :/ sounds funny but it's not really. Plus I should move more.
I think what helps is analyzing what we eat. Maybe there is something you could give up - like fizzy drinks or maybe alcohol during the week? Having a personal trainer at a gym might help as well.
kflynn is right: even though you have a cheat day just move on and try to keep your diet, don't simply give up because you had a worse day.

Look I'm going to post this because every post I read like this always has responses like I know it's fine don't worry about it we are all in the same boat.

The reason you have weight issues is because you won't stop eating rubbish and you don't exercise enough. i.e your lazy (Look I'm being honest). How many fat people do you see in third world pictures? How come they don't suffer from medical conditions where every time they eat they put on weight?

I understand it's harder for others than some but in school it's harder for some people than others, slower people just have to work harder to get the results they want.. Lazy people in school will generally fail.

I love chocolate too love it but I have self control. I understand you are properly looking for nice posts with supportive words and stuff making you feel good but lets be honest the above is true.

The best thing you can do is understand that its harder for you to keep weight down so you need to work harder. If your 2 lazy to, then accept your overweight and embrace it.

Why you bothered to post this I do not understand, did you just want to upset me without actually knowing anything about me or my situation or whats going on in my head?? I already said that it's more of a mental issue with me because I AM NOT LAZY, I look after a toddler all day every day and barely get a minute to sit down plus I am watching what I am eating but I slip because of low self esteem issues......people in the 3rd world are thin because they don't have access to the food we do...duh!

Harsh but true, battled with weight for years . At least battled with excuses I made to excuse myself. Get informed about what you eat, set targets (realistic targets). Get some friends involved with the training. Join weight watchers if you find it hard to set eating goals. Get rid of the fizzy drinks, they are a curse. Cut down not cut out on stuff. Simple things like drinking loads of water, filling up on veg simple things but work a treat.
It is very easy to loose weight ,just a pain and I miss gorging on crap but it is really worth in the long run and you will really enjoy the treats and odd blow out.

I have cut down on stuff and I exercise more, its the times when I slip that I am struggling with because I then punish myself by comfort eating........thanks for people who tried to give me advice but I am obviously not explaining myself properly as I am not looking for weight loss tips like eat less and exercise more, I know that, I am doing that.....I should just talk to a professional.
Thanks anyway guys. You can close this thread mods if you wish.

I posted because I wanted you to try to understand your overweight because you eat to much rubbish food and don't exercise enough. You can give all the excuses under the world as to why you eat rubbish and don't exercise enough. But that's the truth. If you already know what the problem is why did you bother starting a thread?

That's your problem right there OP giving up too easy. Of course it is a struggle to give up chocolate etc. but you have to have willpower. You are the only one who can stop you from eating the chocolate or you are the only one who can make to that extra 10 minutes on the exercise bike. Set yourself goals, if I don't have chocolate for a week, I'll buy a lipstick. No chocolate for two weeks I'll get my nails done. You have to believe in yourself that you can do it.

    Good luck :)

What you could try is texting a friend the calories/points/whatever every night. Better still, a friend who's trying to lose weight too. You could set a target for when you'd like to be a dress size smaller etc. It's a take on the slimming club idea where you take more care with what you eat because you know you're getting up on a scales every week. Every person who's overweight knows exactly why they are in this situation but breaking bad habits isn't as easy as thin people think it is.

I feel your pain, it's so tough. I have really good days when I'm so disciplined and then others when I just can't stop eating rubbish!
Like another poster said, if I have a really bad day, I put it down as my 'sin day' and move on.
I find 'myfitnesspal.com' a really good help because you can track everything and keep an eye on the calories you take in. You'd be surprised how much calories are actually in some things:eek:
My only advice, and it works so well for me but may not for you (I love my food too much to diet) is lots and lots of exercise to make up for the rubbish.
I walk 30 mins 6 days a week and do weights 3 or 4 times a week for 20 mins a go. I also have a toddler and a 14 month old so I know how exhausting it is and the only thing I can do is just do it and not think about it. I feel so good afterwards.
If I thought too much about exercising, I'd never do it!!
best of luck and don't be so hard on yourself, you do the hardest job ever running around after a toddler all day long imo

I'd highly recommend checking out the website/book "Intuitive Eating". I got it a few months ago when I realised dieting was actually driving me crazy. (4 years of strict diets just to end up heavier than ever, obsessed with food and feeling like a failure!) It explains how dieting messes up our relationship with food, and helps to get back to a healthy relationship with food. Just reading the book took away a lot of stress for me. It isn't always an easy process but it's well worth the effort it takes to end up in a peaceful state of mind about food/eating/body image.

I lost baby weight after having second child much quicker because she slept through the night straight away. Stress and tiredness are really bad for willpower. I live with someone who has weight problems but also works really hard. Whenever he is very busy with work his weight goes up.

The truth is people who successfully lose weight, stop smoking or drinking can have the most annoying 'I'm better than you because it's easy for me' attitude. But usually they have more free time and are also under a lot less pressure. It's not easy when you are busy and under a lot of stress. All I can say is give yourself some time and wait that the toddler get older, try to get some sleep and maybe throw away the weighting scales. A lot of things are much easier when you stop feeling guilty.

Since you say your problem is 'mental,' and that you comfort eat, I only have two pieces of advice (since you don't seem to want to listen to the 'eat less, exercise more' posts) -

Instead of comfort eating, exercise when you're feeling down. Exercise releases endorphins (happy hormones), so you will instantly feel your mood lift after a good work out. Cardio also stops you from feeling too hungry, for a lot of people, so should alleviate hunger pangs that you get when you're in a bad mood.

Speak to a doctor about the issues causing you to comfort eat.

Tbh, nothing is going to change until you take steps to change it. Changing how you eat isn't working if you're falling back to junk food anytime you feel down. I used to do that, too, but now I make damn sure that there's nothing but healthy food in my house, so I can only 'comfort eat' with healthy food.

If you have issues that cause you to comfort eat, you need to deal with them before you deal with the weight.
