Not entitled to social welfare payments

    Hi,
I have been employed for the all of this current academic year on a maternity contract. I went into my local social welfare office today to sign on for the three months of the summer. I was told because I have been paid at the higher rate I may not be entitled to social welfare. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I had not known this and therefore have not budgeted accordingly as any increase in wages was swallowed up with tax ( I know I can claim this back but not until February).

Any knowledge on this would be greatly received.

    Thanks

Your pay had holiday pay inclusive ... So yup, can't sign on right now... You should be able to sign on from mid July though I think... You may need to get stints filled in... This is a form that sw office gives you, and the school/ dept/vec fill in ... Just details how much holiday pay you would have been paid. Get them now and fill in ASAP...
Alternatively you could see if there is any work going locally... I know loads of teachers that do bar work, hotel work, work in Gaeltacht etc for the summer months ... Might be worth a shot

Meant to add for future reference,
I presume you weren't paid on Xmas, midterms, Easter etc
In future sign on for these weeks too
You won't get any money but its important to sign for your credits anyway
The paperwork is a pain but its important to keep these things up to date - esp if you are female and would be taking maternity leave in the years to come

You'll get something alright - I did last summer - but not for a while.

You earn the same as teachers on a temporary contract but it is divided differently; yours per day or per hour, temo/permanent for the 52 weeks of the year. You need to sign on as happywithlife has said to keep credits going etc, but you have already received your holiday pay, therefore are not entitled to social welfare and to earn more than your temporary contract counterparts.
