Hope I'm posting this in the right place,

Looking at trading my 06 VW for a A4 2009/2010 reg.

Is it safe to buy a UK reg car from a dealer in Ireland - Yes or No, how do you know its legit mileage, have been told I'm mad to even think of it as most cars coming in are clocked and they change covers on brake/accelerators to mimic less mileage......

Would you buy a 2009/2010 diesel car with 170,000 km plus????

Hope I don't sound thick, but need a bit of info/advice.............

Always do a HPI check on the car. You can do this with a VIN or UK reg number. This will determine if it was ever in an accident, the mileage and any outstanding finance. If you determine who serviced the car in the UK you could also call them for verification.

You need to be careful buying a UK car in Ireland. Importing is an easy way to cover up a dodgy history if you don't do your homework.

lol ......:pac: who told you that?

you'll only buy a clocked car if you LET yourself buy a clocked car ....... ;)

@Ksimpson, you don't have to be anymore carefull buying a uk car, than you do buying an irish car .........as you say, do the proper checks

well to be fair to the OP - Diesel Audi A4's are probally the most clocked type of cars second only to a Passat.
Clocking is rife but it is not impossible to get one with genuine mileage. A full service history is a must and so is a HPI check.
If you are spending a bit of money on the car - get an AA reoport - this should uncover any discrepencys.

Who came out with a statement like that? Utter bull. It's easier to clock an Irish car and you can buy pedal covers in any main dealer. In my experience the mileage register in the UK is a lot more reliable than the Irish one. Do a HPI check and you'll be fine.

I personally wouldn't buy one from an Irish dealer as it's not hard to go to the UK,buy a decent car and pocket the dealers profit margin.

Get the service history, ring one or two of the servicing dealers in the UK to verify the mileage at the time.

    Job (relatively) done!

What else would you do to verify the mileage?

Check the MOT if it has one

Check the MOT if it has one

+1, yep, for free on directgov, and then there's the visual inspection and test, the full proper data check, the mechanical inspection, the paperwork verification etc etc
