Recommend a ferry destination in France

    Hi Folks,

we would love to take a week's holidays at the end of Sept/start Oct. The plan originally was to go to Spain with a cheap flight. But I have since found out I'm pregnant and will be rather large to say the least by then, so a few hours in a small airplane seat probably wouldn't be the most comfortable place to be, so my husband keeps telling me it might be better not to fly (personally I think 2-4 hrs in a plane v's 18 hrs on a ferry is much of a muchness).

so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a nice place to go in France, where the weather would still be nice and sunny (doesn't have to be too hot, around 20-22 degrees would be enough, but hotter would be ok too), but within a comfortable drive from the arrival port. If we can find somewhere that fits the bill then I might compromise and agree to a ferry holiday.

Ideally we'd like somewhere that you can relax and chill out and enjoy a bit of sun, and do the odd spot of sightseeing.

Doesn't have to be fancy - in fact the cheaper the better!

    thanks for your help.

Sorry but guaranteed sunshine in late September/early October near a ferry port accessible from Ireland is not possible in France, you'd have to drive at least 8 hours to get down South for some sunshine which allied to the ferry journey is just not worth it. And even then at that time of year there's no certainty of sunshine.

How long gone will you be then? Can you not get away before then?

I *think* there's a reasonable train service from Cherbourg to Paris, so you could always get the ferry & train to Paris and then the TGV to points south. Or you could even get the sleeper to Barcelona or Madrid which would give you an even greater chance of sun at that time of year. It helps if you enjoy travel by train.

The last two posters are correct.

There is nowhere that fits the bill. Anywhere within 5 hours drive of Cherbourg or Rosscoff would have Irish Autumn weather at that time, a bit warmer than here, but not really any better or drier.

Based on my experience of pregnancy / flying when pregnant / ferry journey to France ( not while pregnant), I would guess that the journey by ferry would be horrible when pregnant.

If you are only 6/7 months pregnant, and in good health, a short flight is not too uncomfortable.

thanks folks! looks like I'll just have to over rule hubby on this one - flight it is!

I'll only be just 6 mths gone, but I am having twins and I am already HUGE, so I can only imagine that I will be the size of a small country by the end of Sept. Which won't be too comfy to be squashed into a plane seat, but better than hours in a car I reckon.

Spain would probably be the best bet - relatively short flight time.

I can't get away before August due to work committments unfortunately and I'm not keen on August temperatures either, so September is realistically the soonest we can go.

If I were you I would give it a miss this year or have a staycation.

It's the twin factor, more possibilities of something going wrong.
More chances of an early delivery.

If something goes wrong you really don't want to be out at sea.

Everything would probably be fine and uneventful, but if something does go wrong, and speaking from experience, the language barrier really comes in to effect then.
You get by ordering a meal in a restaurant etc, different story when your in a hospital and the doctor is trying to find out whats wrong.

Maybe wait and see how you are and you could always book a last minute deal if you are feeling ok.
