I've a friend here with me who is in a bit of a bind, he originally started on bikes and got the motorbike provisional 4 years ago and then got the car provisional added to it a year ago. Since the car was added to the bike he now needs his third provisional for the car. He booked his test before his second ran out and waited a good while expecting to get a date, it now turns out that they won't give him a test date till he has his EDT completed. Problem is his provisional is out of date now and he can't renew till he gets a test date, so can he do EDT with out of date provisional since they won't give him a date till he has it?

    Sorry for terrible wording.

Your post is hard to understand. If I understand you correctly, you are asking if your friend can do his 12 EDT lessons with an expired provisional license? No he can not. He should not be doing any driving at all with an expired license, driving lessons or otherwise.

Your friend can still get a 3rd leaner permit. He just has to apply to do the test, and prove that he has applied for it. Once he has a letter stating that he has applied for your test, he will get a 3rd learner's permit that is valid for a year. He is then road legal to do his 12 EDT lessons.

Well, what he is saying is, his friend is on his 2nd provisional, but its out of date, and for him to get his 3rd provisional, he is required to have proof he sat a driving test, However he cant sit the test because his provisional is out of date, and he wants to know the net step.

i do understand his question, im just not sure of the answer. hopefully someone might understand what i said and help you.

*Edit, tell your friend to try ring the Motor Tax office, they should have the information needed.

No probs. Your friend just needs to have applied for the test to get his 3rd leaner permit. He doesn't need to have sat the actual test itself.

What actually happened is he got them to send a new confirmation email. It turns out that they have changed it since he got his original, his original confirmation letter said clearly that it couldn't be used for the third provisional meaning the only proof that could be used was the letter giving you the date. It's now changed that it can be used. I guess maybe it's because people like my friend were getting stuck because they couldn't get the test date without the EDT and couldn't get the EDT without the test date.

Heres a quote from the payment confirmation email from end of Feb
If you are applying for a third or subsequent Learner Permit, you must produce evidence that you either sat a test in the previous two years, or show evidence that a driving test has been arranged for you. This letter will not suffice.

And here is the quote from the newer version
If you are applying for a third or subsequent Learner Permit, you can use this letter as evidence to the Motor Taxation Office that a driving test is being arranged for you.

Must be a day for being confused.
It looks from your post that your friend only got their First Learner Permit for car 1 year ago. If not when did they get it, now car. Not the original bike permit
