    Hi,
    Been thinking about doing the rigid truck licence (C),
    If I was to do it and get the test (without doing the cpc stuff)
    Can the licence expire?
    Is there a fee for keeping it active?

    Thanks

    you will have to do a cpc course every year 50/90e to keep the licience.every employer will check to see the cpc card/certs are up to date. a licience without the certs is useless and cannot be used to drive.legal requirement/fines if caught driving without them.

    Thanks,
    What I mean is,

    If Im not working as a professional driver will the licence lapse?
    So could I get the licence now and say in a few years do the CPC and off I go?

    Don't think you can get the licence now without having the cpc done. Although I know several truck mechanics that have got the licence without a cpc, not sure how that's done but worth looking into.

    looks like you don't need it for repairs and so on

    Driver CPC Exemptions include drivers of:
    1. Vehicles with a maximum authorised speed not exceeding 45 km/h;
    2. Vehicles used by, or under the control of, the armed forces, civil defence, the fire service and forces responsible for maintaining public order;
    3. Vehicles undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance purposes, or of new or rebuilt vehicles which have not yet been put into service;
    4. Vehicles used in states of emergency or assigned to rescue missions;
    5. Vehicles used in the course of driving lessons for any person wishing to obtain a driving licence or a CPC;
    6. Vehicles used for non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods, for personal use;
    7. Vehicles carrying materials or equipment that the driver uses as part of
      their work, as long as driving the vehicle is not the driver’s main activity.

    You can indeed - you can't drive commercially and/or for a living without the CPC though. I'm in the process of getting a C-license with no CPC, 'cos I wants an old race truck to double up as a campervan and a mobile workshop/garage. HGV licenses run for a maximum of only five years, unlike the ten years for cars/bikes, and you need a medical report to renew them. That aside, there isn't really anything more to maintaining it.
