The dreaded headset creek noise??

So i was getting this awful creaky clicky noise whenever i got out of the saddle and put the power down as the bike rocked side to side. So i checked the headset and low and behold the bottom bearing was a bit rusty and done for.

replaced the integrated headset with a bbb one, regreased every thing and it was running fine until yesterday. now the creak is back! its doing my head in. theres no play in the headset, the ferrels on the cable housing dont seem to be making any noise either as i know this can cause noise too. could it be the bottom bracket or crankset? It definitely seems to coming from the head set though as i can make the noise by making the front of the bike flex.

its doing my head in! you can hear me climbing a hill from the bottom of the other side!

Said it before and I'll say it again, light coating of grease on fork drop outs.
I had a creaking noise I swore was coming from the crank/BB area, changed BB,regreased and tightened chainring bolts but it still creaked on climbs. Tried the above,as mad as it sounds, it cured my noise issue.

Have you carbon spacers under your stem?

Yes, it's a carbon steerer too.

Sometimes stacked carbon spacers can rub very slightly making a creaking noise, you could try to re-assemble with a small amount carbon assembly paste (or even a tiny bit of grease), or else place an alloy spacer between the carbon spacers, this worked for both my mtb and roadbike.

The creak on my brand new carbon bike when putting power down was from the BB30 bearings and lack of grease when installed at factory. They were replaced with new ones and greased properly and the annoying creak is now gone.

i thought the same thing too, and my bearings where gone. the new one were put in properly and greased to the max! although its difficulty to put loads of it on since im dealing with a carbon streerer too. ive greased the fork drop outs and put alloy spacers on.il let you know how my commute goes

I'm having the exact same problem... I wonder has it anything to do with the amount of wet weather we've had recently?

google 'bb30 noise' or 'bb30 creaking', there is a Lot of interesting stuff out there about this issue.

Just an update, greased the fork drop out and noise is gone for now :) thanks so much for the help. Just wondering the fact I applied grease to the fork drop out which are carbon should be ok? Yes?

eh if i were you i would wipe off that grease or you could be looking at your front wheel heading down the road in front of you.
its more than likely your bottom bracket thats causing the problem or maybe just maybe the rails of the saddle now you could grease those.

Nothing wrong with grease on the drop out. My wheel hasn't gone flying off my bike and it's over two years since I solved my issue with this method. I'm only talking about a spec of grease on your finger tip to put a film on the dry surface of the drop out. A properly tightened skewer isn't going come undone from that.

Definitely not the saddle I have that problem too haha but it's only when Im seated on it. This noise comes from getting out of the saddle usually while climbing. It's when the bike is getting rocked side to side. The bottom bracket seems ok no play in it and its only 5 months old. The issue seems solved thank god

Greasing/oiling the fork dropouts has solved the problem for me in the past too. There is definitely no fear of the wheel coming out, not only will the skewer hold the wheel as tight as before as mentioned by The tax man but the (annoying) "lawyers tabs" on the fork dropouts will keep the wheel on even if by some freakish miracle the skewer flopped open in sheer fright at the sight of the grease. Those tabs are so effective at keeping the wheel in situ that they'll do a good job of fighting you off even when you really do want to remove the wheel. ...and if you are fortunate enough that your forks don't have those tabs, then tell no-one or there will be a queue of people, me included, lining up to try to buy them from you.

well lads i wouldn't chance it to be honest if it works for you lads so well and good i'm not faulting your idea, but before you try that trick try not tightening the QR so much ,the qr doesnt have to be hammer home if that fails then by all means try the grease trick but it wasn't me who :D:D:D first recommended it.

Loose pedals?....worn cleats??.. They will creak/squeak when under load (eg when out of the saddle climbing)
