Cancelled Sky- DVD Recorder Set Up

    Hi there,

Hopefully someone can help me out. I cancelled my sky subscription and it is due to be switched off tomorrow. I decided to buy a dvd recorder and I went with the Toshiba DVR20KB which is a dvd/vcr combi.

So from tomorrow I will have my freeview channels through my sky box and a dvd recorder.

My problem is trying to tune the channels onto the dvd recorder. When I go to auto tune the channels it just finds the one channel that the sky box is on, eg. if I have RTE1 on tv and I try to auto tune the recorder it only finds RTE1.

I was hoping to set up the epg on the recorder as it would make it alot easier to record programmes so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

The DVD will only find the channel that that the box is on, when you have it tuned you can change the channel with the sky remote. You won't be able to watch one channel and record another. You also won't have any Irish channels when your subscription finishes.

I know about the Irish channels, I will be adding them via aerial.

Does that mean that I have to tune in each of the channels individualy to the dvd recorder?

You won't be able to tune the satellite channels individually, you will only receive the sky box feed and will only be able to record whichever channel the sky box is switched to.

No. Once you can see one channel from your Sky box, that's all you need. Remember you can only record whatever is on your Sky box at that time.

Not the most user friendly solution to be honest. Will take some getting used too.

A freesat or freeview recorder would have been a better buy.

My guess is you won't be able to tune in the Irish Saorview channels with that dvd recorder either, it may not have the necessary MPEG-4 video decoder required to view the Irish channels but it may be able to store the radio channels on Saorview.

To record the Saorview channels you'll require a box like this - http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-23-WP6500&pages=1&prod=WP6500&brands=WALKER&image=

Surely that cant be right? I could record a different channel on a vcr recorder 10 years ago

To record saorview channels individually you would need a recorder with a digital tuner, you cant tune individual channels from a sky box to any recording device.

You could record the analogue terrestrial and analogue cable signal on a vcr as it had an analogue tuner.

The analogue terrestrial signal (via an aerial) was switched off at 1000 hrs on Oct 24th last, the analogue cable signal is still running on some cable systems for the moment.

Analogue terrestrial was replaced by digital terrestrial tv which requires a DVB-T/MPEG-4 tuner, as far as I know there are no VCRs or DVD recorders with an MPEG-4 tuner.

As regards your first post the dvd recorder will not be able to tune in the satellite channels separately as it doesn't have an inbuilt satellite tuner.

    Ok, thanks for the reply.

So there is no way for me to record one channel while I watch another and I cant record the saorview channels?

Not directly with the dvd recorder, only via an ouptut from a satellite receiver or saorview receiver with the required channel selected.

PVRs are the way to go with built-in Hard Disc Drives (HDD) like the one i mentioned above for Saorview.

The DVD recorder could be used to archive recordings from a digital recorder or to give a recording to someone else. That's what I use my DVD recorder for.

Cush, are you saying that if a saorview channel is sent from the tv via scart to a vcr/dvd recorder, that it cannot be recorded?????

Yes it can by selecting the appropriate EXT/EXTN on the DVD Recorder, I presume that your DVD Recorder has a modulator?
I can record Saorview/ FTA satellite or from my Sky box to a Sony RDR DVD Recorder if I so wish, I haven't done it for two years at least. You can only record what is tuned in on the TV, one station at a time.

You would need two DVD Recorders/VCR'S/ or modulators on two different televisions to record one channel from a Sat box and a Freeview HD or Saorview box for terrestrial stations at the same time.
That is why the true twin tuner PVRS are King in that respect.

The modulator isn't required for an EXT input from a Saorview STB/TV or satellite receiver. The RF modulator is basically redundant in the dvd recorder since ASO.

That's true The Cush but an RF modulator can be used with a Sky Magic Eye which I have used in the past.

Of course, but of no use with with a Saorview TV/STB.

    Ok, thanks for the replies.

Looks like I will have to go back to sky so, is it just a matter of phoning them up and getting them to reactive my sky card?

    Will that take long?

Looks like I will have to go back to sky so

You could go the Freesat+ route, sub-free channels with a built-in HDD for the uk channels - http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels/

I have reactivated it now and the channels are working but I cant seem to record, any ideas why?

Ring them and ask them to turn the recording facility on.
