Fire alarm

Hi, not too sure if in in the right section but i am doing some fire stopping work in a chipper that is getting some work on the inside, its a small block of two units two story, with one living area over both and to the rear, anyway we are installing the fire stopping to the ceiling of the chipper unit and finishing off the suspended ceiling and rest of shop.

The electrician on site is doing some rewiring to accommodate the changes in layout and new lighting, He was saying the shop only needs emergency lighting to the area of the chipper and not the living accommodation ? he also said that the unit does npot need a fire alarm to the unit, and if he did fit one he would have to include the full building and not just the area getting the refurbishment??

I just find it strange why we would go to the trouble of fire stopping the ceiling and for the electrician not to fit a fire alarm?

It is very hard to adivse without knowing the specifics.

If in any doubt consult the fire officer and follow his advice.

The chop shop needs heat sensors, not smoke and any rooms off it I.e. store rooms require smoke detection.

The accommodation above will require fire alarm detection.

Although this may often be correct I do not think that it can be applied in every single case.

Ok! I would advise you ask your insurer as it is a requirement in a public building, which a shop forms part of.

bit tricky if he's just an ordinary spark

-he can't really make the call on whether it should be provided
-or design it to IS 3218 either

ime that was done by other parties

unless maybe has the nsai standard and all that?

Perhaps he more than an "ordinary spark" or perhaps he employs the services of a specialist (as I am at the moment for fire alarm, emergency lighting).

yes what i mean is the job may be small and there's no mention of fire system

    as happens

he may not not be competent to make the call or design system

if there's a design engineer involved he may specify system to is3218 and you can take it from there
as was often the case ime
