Same phenomenon, different light source :)

A halo around the sun or moon is caused by ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds acting like prisms to refract and split light into its constituent colours. The shape of the ice crystals determine what type of halo or other optical phenomenon forms.

Often, you can expect rain in 12 to 18 hours if you see a halo as the cirrus clouds causing it are leading a warm front - especially if the halo is in the western evening sky as the prevailing winds in Ireland are blowing from that direction.

Have a look at http://www.atoptics.co.uk/ (section on ice halos) for more details and amazing photos.

    John
