It's a test to see if you can use your loaf... the smart ones will ring up and make enquires about how to gain access, as for the others they'll be hanging around outside!

I used to know an American HR manager who's main job was recruiting staff for the factory floor, now it was very important that people were tidy there because part of the job involved moving chemical compounds around and the last thing you wanted was for someone to trip. So he came up with a simple test - before interviews he placed a broom on the floor in front of his office so candidates had two choices: step over it or pick it up - guess who did not get the job!

Sounds like a little test to me. Just call your interviewer for verification. Could also be a typo. I would call

It might just be when the manager has time to interview and perhaps they want to test your skills in displaying items, using the till etc . Good luck :)

some stores do 'moves' out of hours where they remerchandise the floor when the store is closed.

    Could be a typo

It could be a typo, or it could be that they conduct interviews out of hours to suit both management (so as they won't be busy doing other things) & applicants who are already in employment & won't have to arrange time off their present job to attend.

It would probably be no harm to ring & confirm the time.

That's so stupid. You could also say that a simple-minded person who simply saw it as an obstacle would pick it up without wondering why it was there whereas a clever and safety-conscious person would ask why a broom was sitting in such a random place - perhaps it was covering something spilled on the floor or holding a door open or whatever, and they'd think about whether they should pick it up or leave it. Assuming the manager was around, it could be seen as too forward and 'I know better than you' to go ahead and pick something up that may be there for a reason, meaning that you don't respect authority. See what I mean? Tests like that are silly and reflect badly on the idiots who sets them up, IMO.

If it were there to fulfil either of those functions, then it would still be a breach of H&S. And someone who is not conscious of H&S enough to at least enquire as to why the broom was there, probably wouldn't be the best employee in a chemical compounds factory.

And wouldn't the manager, who would have also seen the broom, be the authority on that?

    H&S is everybody's responsibility, don't you know??? :)

Have you ever worked in an environment where dangerous chemicals are handled? I have and believe me you want the guy/gal who picks up the broom to be your work mate!!!

TG, I've only every been at the site of one serious release of chemicals, but it was not pretty. The sirens start, the office doors with protective seals slam shut and lock, you wait and wait for the announcement that this is only a drill... but it never comes. Then it dawns on you that this time it is for real and that all that may be between you and injury or even death is the seal on your office door, and you hope to God it is doing it's job. And then your mind starts to play tricks on you... what if it odourless and it is already seeping in but you can't tell....

Go through that once and you'll have different view of the kind of people you want around you....

: The op is going for an interview in a shopping centre not a Nuclear Power Station.

Op as the others have said just ring and confirm interview time and date.
