    Hi all,

My youngest sons doing a project in school about the Irish countryside and I'd would be grateful if you could help me/him out.

    1) What breed of cow would be the most commonly kept in Ireland? (in other words, you walk down a lane in the countryside, look over the gate, what breed of cow would you reckon would be in the field?)

    2) You often see cows that are black and white, pure white, reddish/ginger etc. Would they all be roughly the same size? ie maybe a white cow is always at least a good 2 foot taller than a ginger one?

    3) Same as question 1 except for sheep. So whats the most common breed of sheep in Ireland? And if you looked over a gate, what breed of sheep are you probably gonna see.

I think thats about it really. Any help at all would be great :)

This will vary a bit depending where you are in the country.

    1.Friesian

2.Rare breeds are sometimes smaller. Generally the same size.

3.Probably close between Texel and Suffolk.

    Cattle -
Generally two types of cattle. Those bred to produce milk and those bred to produce meat.
Of the milk type, 'friesian' cows are the most common. These are black & white.
Of the meat (or beef) breeds, there is a lot of cross breeding going on but Limousin, which are all red, and charolais, which are all white, are the most common.

Thanks for all the great info everyone.

I was able to get plenty of information online on the different cows. But the sheep was a bit harder. We're down to the last peice bit of the project and I cant find the answer anywhere online at all :(

Hes doing a size chart similar to this

How do you think a Texel/Suffolk sheep would look on a chart like that? Im guessing probably somewhere between knee and waist height? I cant seem find measurements for them online anywhere.
