liming question

    lads,

I'm reseeding in the next week or so and the lime will be going out shortly. I have a handy size field ear marked for an autumn reseed or maybe spring next year depending. Would I be mental to put the lime on this field while the contractor is there? It has a nice cover of grass at the moment and I was hoping to get a cut of hay off it around late july. It would be handy to get it done while he's there but if it adversely affects the chances of a hay crop i'll leave it. The grass is probably six inches high at the moment Thanks....

    Hello foxy lock,

*i think* that lime can effect silage fermentation, so if you don't get your hay, and have to bale it up - you could be in trouble.

Like I say - I think, but am sure someone will be along who knows for sure.

I'd advise against it. It will stick to the grass and not get down into the soil. As well as this, it is advised not to cut a forage crop for 12weeks post application.

I have a bit of liming to do. We would usually do in Nov but ground is lovely and dry at the moment.
    1. I have ground fertilised with 40 units of N 18-6-12, this is for grazing in Dec. could I lime now.

2 ground that will get fert in early Spring I will do in Nov. what is the craic with urea, I cannot remember. Can you spread lime and follow with urea or is it the other way round?

    1. No issue here
    2. Urea first, can lime after 1 week; lime first, avoid urea for 3-6 months
