European Team Championships - Team selection discussion

It's three weeks until Santry welcomes 11 national athletics teams to take on our own squad in Division 1 of the European Team Championships. Those teams include the likes of the Czech Republic, Sweden and Hungary who will likely field Olympic finalists and some medalists, so we'll need to bring out the A team to ensure we survive.

Based on early-season form, the below is what I am guessing the Irish team will look like. Disclaimer: Some of my selections are extremely ropey and based off the top-20 lists. Also, I'm assuming most of the NCAA crew won't be available - not sure how accurate that will prove. I also excluded athletes who haven't started their seasons yet, as I can't guess their form and fitness (e.g. Gillick, Cuddihy, Hession, O'Lionaird, Mageean, McCullough, etc), also some athletes might improve over the next couple of weeks before selection (e.g. Deirdre Ryan, Ciara Everard, etc).

    Event | Men | Women
    100 | Jason Smyth | Amy Foster
    200 | Marcus Lawler | Amy Foster
    400 | Brian Gregan | Sinead Denny
    800 | Mark English | Rose-Anne Galligan
    1500 | Paul Robinson | Claire Tarplee
    3000 | Eoin Everard | Fionnuala Britton
    5000 | David McCarthy | Mary Cullen
    3000m s/c | Rory Chesser | Kerry Harty
    110mh/100mh | Ben Reynolds | Derval O'Rourke
    400mh | Jason Harvey | Jessie Barr
Long Jump | David Quilligan | Kelly Proper
Triple Jump | Denis Finnegan | Caoimhe King
High Jump | Simon Phelan | Aisling Croke
Pole Vault | Brian McGovern | Tori Pena
Shot | Colin Quirke | Claire Fitzgerald
Discus | Colin Quirke | Claire Fitzgerald
Hammer | Padraig White | Aoife Hickey
Javelin | Matthew Martin | Anita Fitzgibbon
4x100 | Smyth, Lawler, Colvert, Hynes | Foster, McSweeney, Whelan, Creaner
4x400 | Gregan, Harvey, English, Dowling | Denny, Barr, Mooney, Cannon

I hate to say it, but I think we're going to be under pressure on home turf. We're likely to get spanked as usual in the field events, so we will need Pena to excel and everyone else to punch above their weight. If Wayne McCullough is available, that would help ease the blow from the likes of Hungary, Czech Republic and Sweden.

    Edit: Changed misleading thread title

Thomas Cotter ran 8.41 steeple which is the fastest in years.
Ciara Everard will be on the team for sure

AAI will surely be hoping that our missing top athletes will compete next weekend.Anybody know who is entered where next weekend?
We would really need the likes of Cuddihy for 400m & 4x4,Deirdre Ryan High Jump,O Lionard 3k,Hession 4x1 and McCullough hammer.
Phil Healy should probably be included in that 4x1 along with Derval.Dara Kervick,Brian Murphy and even Gillick if hes anywhere near racing in the 4x4.
Whats Simon Phelan jumped this season? Also what time has Claire Tarplee ran?

Yep, I was leaving out as many of the NCAA athletes as possible just in case they're all wrecked after the Nationals and not coming back for the ETC.

2.14 and 4.15 respectively. Although, just after seeing that Laura Crowe has run 4.12 at the BMC meet.

Tomás Cotter is due home on the 12th of June so I imagine he will make himself available for selection.

As an aside, anyone know when tickets will become available for this, no info under the ticket section on the website.

Alas, due to the total lack of any media about this apart from people hunting it out I cant see you having huge issues getting tickets or into the ground :(

    Some preselections: http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=32499

    Derval O'Rourke (100m Hurdles)
    Fionnuala Britton (5,000m)
    Tori Pena (Pole Vault)
    Kelly Proper (Long Jump)

Important we have our strongest team members at our disposal, this is a good start.
