I currently have the Nikkor 70-300mm lens. I would like something with a longer range. I will be using it predominantly for Sports photography (hurling). Have been searching on the net, but would like recommendations from the Pros!!

For sports photography you really need what is described as a fast lens. A lens of f2.8 constant from minimum to maximum zoom. Unfortunately these lens cost big money. a 70 -200 f2.8 would cost at least 1000 euro secondhand and if you were to go up to 300mm the cost would be a lot more.
Have a look at this link >> http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2186/AF-S-NIKKOR-300mm-f%252F2.8G-ED-VR-II.html

I was afraid I was gonna get an answer like that! I presume this one is much too slow for what I want?

    Hi Cyberdave,

I can only echo what Pixbyjohn said, you would really need a min 70-200 2.8L lens or something similar. I shoot a lot of hurling and used to use 55-250 4-5.6 but it wasn't at the races. Since I picked up the 2.8L and I am delighted with the results.

You can see some samples of my shots with the 2.8L here but unfortunately it is expensive!!

Nikon 80-200 2.8 lens. Bit older than the Nikon 70-200 but optically just as good. It doesn't have IS. I've had one for years. Brilliant lens.

I have the same and find it excellent as well. (Actually on my 2nd one as the first one was stolen..). Use it mainly for Soccer and Road Races. Second hand they go for about €700.

@OP - Unfortunately longer range for Sports Lenses, e.g. Nikon 300mm 2.8 is entering into loadsa money territory.
For now I'd recommend a 70 or 80-200 f2.8 and concentrate on getting decent shots in one area of the pitch at a time - depending on your position you should be able to cover a quarter of the pitch at a time quite easily.
At local games you can probably move around a bit so can get fairly decent coverage of a team. Forget about guys in the opposite corner and just bide your time until the action comes your way and you'll get the shots you want most of the time.
