MF 165 - worth getting an extra hydraulic spool?

A few questions from someone who is mechanically challenged;)
    • I've an ancient MF165 that has 1 hydraulic spool (edit: probably a tipping hose) - what could I potentially operate with this?
    • A lad recently suggested a hydraulic top link would be useful - what could I use it for?
    • He told me I'd need a second spool - is there much involved in adding this? How much?
I know I know, go and upgrade the tractor (it doesn't have power steering either:rolleyes:). But for the next 2 or 3 years there is much higher priority items for any spare dosh that appears;)

Are you sure it's a spool valve and not just a tipping hose. 1 spool valve will have 2 plugs on the back of the tractor to work a double acting ram.

You could run a log splitter

You're probably right redzer, it would explain why there is only one!

    Bump!

I see a hydraulic top link would set me back €120. How much would it cost me to modify the tractor so I could use it?

Main benefit I see is being able to tip the transport box up and down. Any others?

Well as I see it your looking for a reason to get a hyd top link and spool valves. To me that means you don't need them.
Keep your money for something you need. How about that power steering??

The hyd top link will easily strain a regular transport box. So you'll soon be looking for a new one.

Personally if I don't find myself badly stuck for something on a fairly regular basis I don't consider spending money on it.

I got a lad to fit a power steering kit on the fathers 165 there last winter and it's a god send. Couldn't be without it now

You're talking a lot of sense there.

Well never a truer word said. Im actually surprised at you Just do it!! :pac: Better spent on drainage etc etc .... or perhaps put it towards a mower. Oul lad has it in his head to get a hydraulic box, but I know in my heart we wouldn't get the use out of it!!

That's alot cheaper than I had in my head, about half. Must cost it again, well worth it at that kind of money;)

Ah sure you know how things get into your head. I just wanted to get a feel for what I'd get out of it and what it would cost. You know after a few days these bright ideas lose there shine and reality sneaks in. And once a month the bank statement arrives which is always the real reality check;)

    Just off topic ...
I have a 165 square axis with 1 spool valve @ the back and am getting a transport box.
Should get a standard box with hydraulic top link or just a hydraulic box.
    Would a 165 be able for a 6' box ?
    Tks
