    In a word 'No'.

Is it possible for RTE to lose the license for 2fm? I get the feeling they aren't really doing a good job meeting their brief.

Although Im not a lover of the whole singer/celeb turned radio presenter, you have to consider the fanbase that Nicky Byrne has.

Exactly, plenty of other stations offering what they need.

Gerry is dead, they need to stop trying to find a "next Gerry Ryan" which is what this appears to be another desperate attempt to do.

I'd imagine after listening to him banging on for 2 hours a day for a while they'll soon be wondering what it was they saw in the lad pretending to be singing sitting on a stool for so long.

Hector can be annoying enough at times but I'd rather listen to him than Nicky 'look at how white my teeth are' Byrne after.

Isn't Nicky Byrne's voice too croaky for radio?

2fm bring "BIG" names in to save sinking ship. That's new.

2fm needs to be canned. Right through the day it's flawed.

Hector - Originally liked him but as with all 2fm shows it quickly plunged into the same ol same ol. Lacks any originality and the only new weekly features that ever happen are because of some sponsored competition like "Guess what's in the Kerry Foods Hamper". F@cking incredible listening there. Boring rubbish that doesn't draw the listener in. Do the producers bother to look for decent guests beyond the likes of FIona Looney? Lazy lazy lazy.

Tubs - Needs to go back to Radio 1. Sounds far too uniform for 2fm. Regardless of what you think of his style, his show on Radio 1 worked.

Colm Hayes - Bland talk show in comparison to the energy of the likes of The KC Show on Today FM. Sounds fed up and is afraid to take callers on and voice his opinion. Nothing about this show stands out. Fills the schedule and holds its numbers. Standard 2fm attitude.

Larry - Past it. Bosses are scared to let the "Legend" go. Show reeks of the warp that 2fm are stuck in. Could fill the hour with decent content.

Rick O'Shea - A good presenter whose been messed around by 2fm so much it's no wonder his show sounds as if it doesn't know what direction it wants to go in. Rick needs an evening slot where he's given complete control and I believe we could get a great evening cutting edge talk show. He's wasted at the moment talking fluffy babble.

Will Leahy - Potential there if he could get a production team that didn't fall into the same trap as Hectors. Needs less fluffy "ah sure that'll do" stuff. Also needs to decide whether he wants to be a DJ or a solicitor. No other national broadcaster would stand for it.

Sports - Decent enough but all very serious. Could they take a leaf out of Off The Balls book? Uniform.

Evening schedule - Since Dan Hegarty and Mr Spring joined RTE their listenership figures have absolutely plummeted to almost nothing. The fact that station bosses have done nothing about it is a joke as there is plenty of talent out there to replace them. Simply don't care about the figures at night. Lazy production team playlisting one song after another and pretty much nothing else. We sometimes get "live" sessions and recordings from events but that's about as far as it deviates. We never hear features or interviews with big bands and when you compare it to the likes of BBC Radio 1 and Triple J you realise just how unimaginative and not bothered they are about their evening schedules. They view them as "ah sure nobodies listening at this hour anyway" when they should be viewing them as specialised shows that music fans would tune into if they were decent and listen back to online.

The music through the day is a perdictable mix of standard chart tunes and 80s anthems, the idents sound like they're from a life insurance advert and the chance of finding something unique throughout the day is about as likely as finding beef in a Findus lasagne.

The whole station needs to be pulled off air for a month and relaunched. Gut most of the presenters and production teams, who've come up with nothing original in the last 5 years and take on some decent talent (that doesn't come from the RTE TV department). As if that'll happen. Just shut it all down.

Will his corrupt nation destroyer of a father in law give him a dig out on his new show?

Maybe Dublin's shame could come in and talk about Manunireh and his love for the ponies

    this country makes me sick

Emmm, sorry, I mustn't be in the target demographic but who is Michael O'Doherty exactly? Where would I have seen him before?

I have heard of the other fella alright, mainly because of his inlaws and his lovely white teeth.

Is Michael O'Doherty the chap who owns the Irish version of Hello magazine?

He has a shíte column in the Herald at the moment where he writes about all his fantastic Z list Irish celebrity mates, and takes pot shots at models who presumably wouldn't give him the ride.

    Who ?

THE MAIL. It's a newspaper, allegedly.

Seriously though, the endless calls for 2fm to be 'canned' from the anonymous would-be experts of Internet forums are getting a bit tiresome. It was once a great station and can - and should - be fixed.

For me, that definitely doesn't mean bringing in celebs with no radio presenting experience/qualifications (I don't CARE what "fan base" Nicky Byrne or any other celeb has, that doesn't make them a good radio presenter)... it means taking a risk and bringing in new - possibly relatively unknown - presenters to give it a good kick up the youknowwhat.

Pretty much ALL of iRadio's presenters, for example, started on the station as new names in the business. Now they've an impressive audience in the demographic that they want and they serve them very well. It's not rocket science... I'd have some faith that Dan Healy and the team he'll build around him will do a good job on the station. That, for me, is better than "canning" it any day!

I think we should have a vote on the issue... We've had a number of plans on reform, but there has been no serious appetite for making the tough decisions and bringing about the changes required.. So if they choice is to fix it or get rid of it altogether, then I would vote to get rid of it...

Oh hang on, this isnt the Seanad thread..

I agree with you to a degree, for years I've been reading this forum and have read posts by people calling for 2fm to be closed down and I defended the station. But there's no smoke without fire and it's got to a critical stage where it's not offering the public any unique programming or content and is just down right boring.

Believe me, I don't want to see it getting canned. I'd love to see 2fm thrive.

However, the station is broken, almost beyond repair. There seems to be a culture or attitude towards making lazy programming and if the station is to recover it needs to be gutted of this. It would be a massive task because 2fm employs a lot of people who've been there for a very long time. The best thing would be for it to be gutted, taken off air temporarily, restaffed, rebranded and relaunched. The reasons I alluded to just closing down the station is because I don't think RTE has the balls, or finances, to do this. Instead I'm expecting, but not hoping for, a few half assed schedule changes and the station, at best, will maintain its listenership.

When John McMahon was hired as station head we all said "at last someones going to come in, do something different and get this station back on course". He did F all and just brought in a whole load of well known personalities who have no radio experience. If this report about Nicky Byrne and Michael O'Doherty is correct, then nothing will change under Dan Healy. I really hope this isn't the case though.

The similarities are there alright! :pac:

My one issue with canning it would be that it'd leave Today FM unopposed in the national music station market, and I don't think that'd end well for anyone involved, not Today FM, and certainly not the listener.

Real makes a great point, gut it completely and start from scratch. Decide what it wants to be - a Today FM wannabe, or a BBCR1 type station - and stick to it.

To answer the original question, no. I don't think Nicky Byrne or Doherty will make one bit of difference. What's it going to take for PD's in this country to realise the market is saturated with mid-morning talk shows? Tubridy, Hayes, D'Arcy, Dunne, Kenny, Vic Barry, Patricia Messenger, Neil Prendeville, Joe Nash... probably more on other stations. I know there are a few decent alternatives in Dublin (Barry Dunne on 98FM and I think I once heard a show called the Finest Worksongs on Nova?) but down this direction we're stuck with talk or SPIN.

Just for clarification: Finest Worksongs is on Phantom FM. All of Dublin's licenced stations are playing music mid-morning: Radio Nova, Phantom, 98FM, FM104, Spin103, Q102 and Sunshine 106.8. Phantom also scrapped its afternoon talk-based show.

Incidentally, 4FM is also a talk-show free zone mid-morning.... and more recently all of its daytime schedule. I assume Spirit Radio is playing Christian morning mid-morning. Both of these can be picked up in Cork by the way!

Why can't 2FM take on keen presenters from one of the local or regional stations around the country instead of "celebrity" presenters? As another poster said, Michael O'Doherty is a magazine publisher, but I think it is our own VIP as far as I know - rather than Hello. I think he was also involved with TV Now. I saw him once or twice on television. He would be suitable for some lifestyle-type program on Newstalk rather than 2FM.

    1. Its i Radio, the whipping boy of the radio industry. Pirates are taken more seriously than this place.

    2. i Radio have some of the worst presenters in this country. They have no continuity, no idea how to string a link together, no respect for the music, the station, or the listener. There is plenty of ego's there, but most dont know the basics of radio.

    3. Spin have an impressive audience, but at least they know that its not about them, its about the music! Something that i Radio lacks.

    4. Refer to the previous 3!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

Totally agree about the poor quality of presenters on iradio , they are equally bad on spin. Radio in general in this country is in complete disarray. Consider the appalling state of 2 FM ,if you tune into BBC radio 1 for even 5 mins the difference is staggering, they are market leaders and their identity is without question.
In Dublin in the absence of this credible national broadcaster we're left with the annodyne fm104 blazing a trail of 'that was this is' and what breaks my heart is Dublin listeners so starved of quality radio flock to it. 98 FM at least attempt to shake thiings up a bit in the mornings and drivrtime, but on the whole the selection of radio in Dublin is poor as it is Countrywide.
Dan healey has a guilt edged opportunity to become the saviour of the national broadcaster but I'm really not sure he is the man to do it. As I've said before he's a salesman. RTE don't need a salesman they need a programmer and a visionary at that. 2fm needs gutting completely. Radio'legends' need to be fired. It needs to establish a new identity and ditch the woeful talk shows. It needs to become the go to station for new music and not golden oldies.

Dan healey has the chance to become the most important person in 2fms history, will he take it or will he do a john Clarke or a john Mac mahon and completely waste everyone's time and public money. I very much doubt he'll be the saviour Montrose needs.

That's so utterly untrue that it's almost funny.

Couldn't agree less with you, Jimmy... but that seems to be a running theme. You seem to have very little positive to say about Irish radio stations and far too much of the negative to say about them and their presenters.

Contrary to what you say, iRadio are doing very well for themselves and have some excellent personalities on board who know exactly what they're doing... and what they're doing is clearly working as they keep improving their audience figures and their profile among their target market.
    3. Spin have an impressive audience, but at least they know that its not about them, its about the music! Something that i Radio lacks.

Eh... bullsh*t again, sorry! If it was all "about the music", then we'd all just be listening to our MP3 players and not bothering with the radio, where the music occasionally gets interrupted by presenters' voices.

The difference with radio is personality, and both Spin and iRadio have bucketloads of it. It may not be YOUR cup of tea, and it may not work for you, but perhaps you're not their target demographic... who the JNLR figures show it certainly IS working for.

For music it's a choice between 104, for the more up to date stuff. 4fm for the classics, but not for talk with that piss poor night time show. For talk, I prefer 5 live.

Actually I have heard some great stations. Those who appeal to the local audience like lmfm, Clare fm and Radio Kerry.

Age demographic aside, I have a love for good radio, that is something that is lacking in many stations including your beloved 4fm. Parts are great, love the CSI stuff and club classics for instance.

However any time I hear iradio, it makes my ears bleed! There is no concept of being professional, it's more throw up the mic and talk ****e. Hopefully lee Doyle will throw out 90% of the presenters and start over. You might even get a gig there!

Dave Fanning should be put back on Radio 1. They had the right idea a few years back but then sent him back to 2fm. 2fm needs new, young DJs with ambition and drive.

I didn't say anything about 4fm .. the word 'beloved' is a bit of an odd one in the context actually.. and while it is certainly a very good station, as a fan of great radio myself, I happen to disagree with you (surprise!) on both CSI and Club Classics.

Also, just because I don't agree with you on iRadio doesn't mean I'm angling for a gig there. I'm definitely not. Oh.. and there's really no need to get personal.. this isn't about me or where I work(ed) or want to work, so lets not go there.
