Giant Defy 1 Gears

Collected my new bike this morning, will head out for cycle later today. Anyway the guy in the shop was explaining the gears to me...I only ever had a mountain bike so was all new to me. Anyway there are 30 gears on it, (thought there would be only 20). But he said you can only go in the higher 4 or 5 rungs (dunno what the proper term is!!) then you have to drop a level at the front, otherwise the chain will be going back at an angle and will be rubbing against another part! It won't run smoothly. I know that probably doesn't make sense, but I don't know the proper names for parts.
I said so essentially you don't have 30 gears at all, and he said no I suppose not. Is this true...or does it make any sense at all!

Sounds like your bike is a 10 speed with triple chain rings on the front. You don't want to be on the biggest ring and biggest sprocket on the back as it will cause unnecessary wear on the drive train. You'll know when your in the wrong gear as it'll make a noise normally. You'll barely use the smallest ring on the front unless you go climbing huge hills and you're carrying a bit of weight.

Just back from a 25k cycle. Spent most of it in the middle ring at the front and the smallest 2 or 3 at the back....(gears 18, 19, 20??) Anyway, had earphones in and about half ways through noticed that friction noise....like the chain rubbing off part at the front. Seems like its out of line or something. Think I'll take it back to him after the weekend to have a look at it.
