Breathalysers

I've never been stopped by a guard and breathalysed, but are you just blowing in to the same breathalyser that is used for everyone -- like, is there a changeable 'tip' or (and I'm talking about Ireland, so this is probably a no?!) is it sanitized?

I mean, could you get a cold sore or something, if the person who was breathalysed before you had one that touched the breathalyser?

If you had a breathalyser that you bought in a shop, could you ask to use that instead? (Probably a no?)

And, if you refuse, are the guards allowed to bring you to the station for a blood test, and can they hold you for long?

Sorry if some of these are stupid questions altogether, but I've never physically seen a breathalyser (shall be Googling, when I post this).

    Thank you beaucoup!

Yeah, they put a fresh top on it that they tear open. You can't use you're own one as far as I know.

the tube is changeable and they usually let you dispose of it after youve passed the test.....but if you are really worried about it ...why not claim you have asthma and refuse to take the test all together ;)

Diabetes can also produce a false positive under certain conditions. However they still have the right caution you and bring to you to a Garda station in all circumstance. Personally unless you have a severe chest constriction, I wouldn't humour a Garda at a checkpoint.

The process is explained here, look under "What is the procedure if I am arrested for drink driving?"
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driving_offences/drink_driving_offences_in_ireland.html

I've been made to take the test at a checkpoint (passed it), they change the tip for every user.

Done it twice since it was brought in - last time about 3 years ago (haven't seen a checkpoint in about 2!)

Drove up, nice, professional young Garda who went through the spiel even though we both knew I hadn't a drop in me but hey, and asked me to blow in it which actually takes longer than you would think. You wouldn't want to be short of breath or anything.

As expected 0 rating and I got to keep the tip :p

One of the few jobs I actually like to see them doing at the roadside.
