Hello there.. It should not be a problem if it comes from the USA as long as it is the correct one for you car..
I used to have an old civic (it was an S Registration) that was owned by my dad, its been stolen after i spent a lot of money to repair it... . I had to reprogram my key once.. i remember the procedure was really easy to do. Once you put the key into ignition i think you had to turn it on and off etc... I cant really remember it was ages ago!
I'm a proud Corsa owner now.. :-) But since i remember loving my civic so much i did a quick research for you .. http://www.carkeyadvice.com/step-by-step-fob-programming-guides/honda(you can actually find it everywhere. I've seen some very useful videos on http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=civic+2001+programming&oq=civic+2001+programming&gs_l=youtube.3..33i21.20321.26192.0.26224.22.21.0.1.1.0.129.1698.18j2.20.0...0.0...1ac.1.11.youtube.RXhZOqI1fS0 too that shows you how to do it step by step .. I hope this helps you..

    Good luck!

The US spec Honda (and most other makes) remotes work on the 313.8 MHz frequency, while the European ones are on the 433 Mhz. This means that the receiver in your car is expecting a signal in the 433 Mhz range.
But if you PM me the VIN of the car I could confirm if there was a receiver fitted to in the factory.

I thought I might stick it in here as well:

Remote fob programming for 01-05 Civic,98-02 Accord,99-02 CR-V,HR-V, early Jazz etc.

NOTE: It is important to maintain the time limits between the steps.

Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
Within 1 to 4 sec., push the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the key less receiver unit.
Within 1 to 4 sec., turn the ignition switch OFF.
Within 1 to 4 sec., turn the ignition switch ON (II).
Within 1 to 4 sec., push the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the key less receiver unit.
Within 1 to 4 sec., turn the ignition switch OFF.

Within 1 to 4 sec., push the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the key less receiver unit.

Within 4 sec., turn the ignition switch ON (II).
Within 1 to 4 sec., push the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the key less receiver unit.
Confirm you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators. Within 1 to 4 sec., push the transmitter lock or unlock button again.
