Muggee becomes mugger

Enjoying the weather I decided to walk into town from Fairview last night and I took a phone call. It lasted 19 seconds. Just as I was finishing up some *beep* tried to steal my phone.

I didn't want to oblige him and in the tussle he dropped his phone. He thought about getting off his bike, but exclaimed something in skangerese and scampered.

His phone was an old Nokia, so I'm assuming it was his own and not stolen.

The gardai in store street have it now and were interested in its contents.

    So, Mugger 0 Mugge 1

Anyway, that's the funny bit out of the way.

It got me thinking - what do I need to do to protect my S4? I don't even have a password on it.

How can I set up GPS tracker on it if it does go missing? And how can I get it disabled. I know I should take down the sim number.

    BTW, this is not a thinly veiled 'I'm a hero' or that I've got a S4 - I'm trusting that's explicit :D

You can be a hero just for the day - that's allowed. :)

You don't need the sim or imei number if it ever gets lost just ring your network and they can disable both. Why don't you have a password though? I just have mine to activate after 5 mins or so if the phone is left on standby, the S4 has plenty of password options, even facial detection so you dont have to type in anything to unlock it.

Thanks, only have it a week - not a great excuse I know.

I think a phone can be flashed without needing the password... but referring to the phone being disabled, your Service Provider should be able to do that once you ring through to their customer support line.

You're here long enough that for real advice, you need to go to 'mobiles', so I reckon this is a thinly veiled "Ive got an S4" thread. Or possibly, a thinly veiled "I nicked a skangers mobile" thread.

I was at a conference last week which demonstrated that most smartphone security software can be disabled, removed and the mobile sent on, very easily. I have first hand experience of tracking systems and remote wipe, neither worked properly.

All I'd say is, dont put anything important or personal on there(no nudey pictures), and have some insurance that covers loss/theft.

Store your SIM and IMEI numbers in a safe place.
Register your phone with your provider.
Use the pattern or pin unlock feature so phone can't be opened with just a swipe.

These threads from Android forum has many useful app recommendations.

Check out Cerberus in the Google Play store. It costs €3 but it's worth every penny.

dip your phone in baby oil so if anyone wants to steal your phone it will be too slippery and it will slip away and slide to safety

The battery fell out of it and didn't switch it back on. I gave it into the gardai. Was worried about wiping your mans finger prints.

    So, don't know.

Consider getting the tasker app from the Play store.
You can automate many functions on your phone and there are some great anti-theft profiles you can set up.

Right you can either go the free way or the cheapish way.

Either way first thing first, change your lock screen to something that allows you add a message (i believe there was a lock screen made by a google empoyee that works really well) so you can have a message saying if found please call xxxxxxx

Now you can either install Lookout which has a free limited version (also has full version for a cost) this allows you to set it up to take photos if if someone enters lock screen wrong and basic tracking and finding abilities.

But after being pointed at an app called cerberus in the android forum earlier this week i'd recommend it.

Its a week free and then 2.99 as a once off payment, Log onto their website and you can again track phone but also heaps more, record mic, email GPS (it turns it on for you), take photos, hide from the app drawer and if you are rooted its nearly impossible to remove.

You can also wipe both internal and external SD cards and its licence is for a few devices so you can install it on other devices you have too,

all these can also be activated via text from certain phones if they include a certain phrase and password

Yeah they´re not going taking finger prints off it over an attempted theft..

They took fingerprints in my house after an attempted theft. Why would they not this time?
Since the threads started here, Could you expand a bit on this?

From my own experience I had HTC Sense which allows phone tracking and remote wipe. I lost the phone and I had sensitive information on it so I remotely wiped it. After the so called remote wipe, I could not track it anymore. However, I did get the phone back from an honest taxi driver(they do exist people!), and it had not been wiped. Everything was still on it.

The conference, was mostly talking about security software for laptops, but smartphones came into the fold as well.

Things like, remote wipe not working, "secure areas" on the phone that had no encryption, they were just hidden from view, uber-secure lock screens which could be killed using adb shell, etc. I'll need to look at my notes for more specifics.

Root and install webkey. Gives full control over the phone any time it's connected to the internet.

:pac::pac: I am in a room with serious people doing serious things so this literally brought tears to my eyes because I was trying so hard not to laugh out loud. Now I look like I am crying about nothing.

Don't put a pin or lock on your phone.

I have seen it a few times where someone has lost a phone and the person that finds it rings the last dialed number and returns it.

    Most people aren't thieves :)

The suggestion of putting on a message saying how to get in contact looks like a good idea.

Install AndroidLost onto it. You can track it from anywhere, and read the last 10 messages sent/received.

On top of that, you can force on a password, or do a remote wipe if you wish!
