    Sorry if these have already been asked before but Im a complete noob when it comes to ownership of an older car.

    Basically, I've sorta stumbled upon an 87 reg Charade Gtti (quite a rare beast) and im just trying to suss a few things up first to see where I'll stand If i deceide to take on the project.

    1. Seeing as the car is 26 years old will it qualify for the IVS insurance?? Will the fact that i'm 19 effect this??

    2. The car's been off the road for 5 years at this stage. Will I be liable for road tax to cover this period??

    Surely someone on here will tell you to 'go read the sticky thread about it' but if you don't feel like trawling through it trying to piece together your answers:

    You will be able to get 'classic' insurance on that car as it is more than 20 years old. It will be cheaper than standard insurance, but not all companys offer it and you will probably have to have another car insured as your daily driver to avil of the discounted 'classic' policy.

    Generally classic and vintage insurance policys or only available to those over the age of 25 years of age, Carole Nash is 23 I think.

    When you buy the car, the registration should be transfered into your name. As the new owner you will not be liable for tax arrears during the time the car was registered to the previous owner.

    +1 to all that. Basically you will, at 19, have to insure it as an ordinary car would be. It won't be cheap

    There are plenty of other options for insurance.... I'm 20 and have been driving older cars since I got my license at 17. It's a lot to put in a post and I'm running out the door at the minute, but drop me your email as a PM and maybe it will help! Sorry for short response at the minute!

    Im not sure as its been a few months now. Was a silver car. Honestly it was rough enough. Interior was stripped and missing, engine was blown but had parts to repair it but it was 6 years sitting and the body had a few dents and rust in places

    Sounds better than a lot ive seen haha! The engines are the easiest thing in the world to rebuild. If you ever end up getting one let me know :)

    They were a capable little car in their day, and ultra rare now. I would reckon it would be well worth rebuilding/restoring even a really bad one now because they would have to be worth a lot of money for the rarity factor alone,

    Their a piece of history, first 1L car to have 100hp as standard. And i believe this was only recently beaten by the ford 3 cylinder ecoboost engine. Their an absolute joy to work on. I'm restoring a 1L turbo diesel one atm haha

    I had one of those 3cyl diesel ones years ago - 2 head gaskets in 6 months though so I got rid of her haha

    yeah gone through a few on mine too so I finally just bit the bullet and took whole engine out, rebored, slieved, all new rings n bearings, decked block and head and did a full rebuild with custom MLS gasket. Fired her up on saturday, sweet as a nut! 1 small coolant leak on a clip on a pipe tho so need to fix that this wkend. Its in a nightmare of a place to get at too so may have to take off the IP again
