Crankset - Am I choosing a compatible set?

Original part number Shimano FC-M442 - The threads are shot and the pedal is falling off. Need to replace. Pics x 2 attached.

I have a 9-speed drivetrains as the spec says.

I presume you get the other crank arm as well - that its a "set"

Yep, its a set, comes with both crankarms, three chainrings and a set of bolts. Great value, isn't it?

If getting those cranks you'll need to get a new square-taper bottom bracket too - the one you have is Octalink (according to the yellow sticker).

You'll need 110 or 113 BB for 47.5 mm or 50 mm chainline

I got mine from http://www.rosebikes.com/article/shimano-bottom-bracket-bb-un55/aid:515142 , its a better quality one, although bit dearer (add 8e postage)

68 x 110mm - English Thread - if your bike has 68mm English Thread ;-) (95% chance if its not Italian made) and the chainline is 47.5 mm
68 x 113mm - English Thread - as above, and the chainline is 50 mm

73 x 110mm - English Thread - if your bike has 73 mm English Thread and 47.5 mm chainline
73 x 113mm - English Thread - for 50 mm chainline

You can measure the BB width simply with a ruler from underneath, and the current chainline can be measured as here:

If it is only the Thread that is damaged there is also the option to put in a heli-coil-insert, that should do the job. A better bike shop or garage should be able to do it.
I used this once to repair a Crankset and it worked and never gave me any touble. Cost me 10€.

On the other hand the crancset from chainreaction is great value, don't forget that you will need tools to remove parts and assemble the whole thing again.

The bike is a specialised rock hopper.

I have a friend who say he will do it. Failing that I will ask my LBC.

If i have the right parts all will be fine :-)
