I accidentally deleted/lost a project that I did a few months ago. The file contained a Powerpoint presentation and a word document. I've searched my laptop and external hard drive and can't find it. I've tried data recovery software and still no luck (admittedly I am not too proficient as using that software). Has anyone any ideas before I try to start re-doing the entire project.

a few months ago? I don't think its retrievable now. maybe just after but it's more than likely overwritten at this stage.

if you've saved any files between since you lost it and now, they might have overwritten the file your looking for, in which case the data recovery software won't locate it.

Thanks lads, thought as much. The only bit of hope I had was that it appears in the recently opened documents list within Powerpoint. It looks like I have to go back to square 1

There are two types of people: those who backup and those who wished they did!

did you email it at any time ?

you should, always save as , with a new name when you reach a milestone

Back in the 1980's the default on most programs was to make a backup copy of all programs. Until Microsoft make this the default on their office products they are not fit for purpose. Also bonus marks to them for the new .docx formats. the x means it's compressed so if the file is damaged there is no way to recover fragments of it.

    anyway

    get a copy of http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec,

    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step
clear the file types except for .doc .docx .ppt .pptx and let it scan free space.
