Laggy mouse on Win8 x64

I'm getting a really laggy mouse straight after start-up and continuing during regular usage. It is not battery related.

    Here's the machine spec:

    Windows 8 Pro x64
    6GB RAM
    Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz

I'm running a bunch of stuff on start-up - e.g. Skype, Dropbox, TortoiseHg - and there is a definite spike in CPU and disk while they load. Once the spike is going, historically the machine has been just fine with very responsive mouse, but right now it's lagging frequently on a continuous basis.

Any suggestions for diagnosis or cure?

Try using a different USB port, preferably a different hub if available.

Try a different mouse if available.

Try disabling all third party programs and services on startup to see if anything running is causing the lag.

Can you log in remotely across the local network to check if the lag is still noticeable?

I've actually got the same (i5 & 8GB & WIN8.64) and had just put it down to the mouse being on the way out or something? Maybe something more to it?

Some stuff I came accross in my quest to sort this, hopefully useful to others.

Troubleshoot a wireless mouse that does not function correctly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321122

To install the IntelliPoint software, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK

Turn off USB power save option: Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced - look for USB, set to disable under active plan (or all plans).

Move wifi router away from mouse.
