Could I have rats?

Found a dead rat in the middle of the lawn this morning. I have been living in this house for about 9 months now with no sign of mice etc, the house is over 100 years old with outbuildings and surrounded by fields. I have a 1 year old cat that has once brought a dead mouse to the door.

Could it have been the cat bringing this or should I be looking out for precautions to prevent an infestation?

I don't live near canals, rivers, or open sewage.

    Thanks all

If it's in the middle of the lawn it sounds like a cat is "presenting" it to you. Has something similar happen in mine, 4 so far and counting. What's sure is that where there's one there's more so act accordingly.

Where there's humans there's rats. That's because they'll find food and shelter wherever humans are. Your cat may have killed the rat (good cat). Don't lay poison where another animal can get it or another animal (eg your cat) can eat the poisoned animal.

Yeah, there are always rats around - we just don't normally see them! If your cat is killing them then jobsagoodun, I wouldn't think any more about it. It's the balance of nature.

Only if you're drinking too much and then suddenly stop

There's always rats or mice about where humans live.
I've caught some myself even in this "nice/clean" area where I live.

Your cat probably killed it and left it for you. It may have killed it close by or a bit further away and carried it home.
