Wine had smell of urine !

I opened a bottle of wine last night, think it was a "Montgras sauvignon blanc 2012".
I'm nearly sure the screw top was sealed beforehand.

But it had a smell of urine from it... not the bottle, the wine.
Just in case you think it was rats p*ss on the bottle or the like.

I done a google search, and some wines apparently can have that smell.

Anyone shed any light on it ?
Bad batch, too much additives, opened or spoiled, or should I worry that some disgruntled vineyard/bottle factory worker added their own flavours !

There's a lot of cheeses in Germany that would give that bottle of wine a run for it's money. If you wore a pair of socks for a week you'd be roughly in the ballpark for the whiff!

seems that unrine smell from wine isnt all that uncommon

    see this article

    http://www.maddogproductions.com/ds_winetasting.htm
"Last week an article in the wine section of the San Francisco Chronicle (motto: “We had to do something with Section W now that it was no longer about the War in Iraq”) described two wines as smelling like cat urine. This week the wine editor wrote a column explaining that this is a good thing."

Sauvignon Blanc and in particular New Zealand Sauvignon can often have a smell of cat pee.

Sauvignon Blanc often has smell of cat pee along with that of cut grass or asparagus tips. There are some other descriptions of the smell as well which I can't recall. The important question is did you taste it and what was that like?
