Self-employed Fitness Instructor - self assessment query

    Generally scenario:

    Self-employed - commenced 9 months ago (fitness)
Registered as a sole trader but no accounts filed yet.
Divorced receiving maintenance payments for 3 children under 7 years.
Rental income (4 properties) 2 EU, 2 Ireland.
Also receiving income in the last 4 months as a Better-ware distributor on a self-employed basis.
Fitness income - 20 classes per week.
Cohabiting with a partner (no civil status).

His wife used to deal with all the accounts stuff and now everything is in a right mess (she lives abroad now in Dubai/works for Emirates). He has no idea what his tax status is, his tax credits, when/where he should be filing, if he should be declaring rental income, whether he should be paying etc. he cannot afford an accountant.

Where should he start, any help much appreciated. People keep telling him that self assessment is fine for ordinary self-employed people and that accountants aren't necessary, plus he would like to get a handle on it himself.

    Hi

You need to get an accountant to sort this out properly.

There is far to many issues to be sorted out here on a single thread on an online forum. You will only get advise here which may be inaccurate and conflicting.

Also not all people here are qualified or knowledgeable enough and may only be giving their opinion on what they think ought to be the case rather then what actually is the case.

    Good luck

If he cannot afford accountant then maybe for some free advice he could contact MABS or Citizens Information Service to try and get an appointment with CAVA, it would be a start anyway.
