Just doing some research at the min for paint prices for a body respray.
Im looking at a lovely shade of red (massey ferguson red for those that.know it) and with thinners, it will work out at roughly 20 quid a litre for painting (excluding labour)
And taking a wild swing, id guess 3 litres mixed would be more than enough to get around a 3 door hatch more than twice.
The price of the paint comes from a local agri parts store @ €15 per litre of paint
Anyone know what prices busy shops are charging per litre of paint? Eg halfords etc??

Isn't buying paint like the cheapest step/part of painting car? afaik the labour will add like 500% of the paint price?

Define "quality paint" - I paid €89 recently for 1 litre of paint......

At 15 per litre, that would be the standard trsctor paint branded tractol or similar. Imo, not suitable for painting a car unless its something you bought for about 50 quid.

Car being painted wasnt exactly 50 quid but wasnt too far off!

And thats what i was trying to figure out, prices for quality paints in different places, as im sure it varies

€95 a litre for paint for my car, to paint a full car you're looking at around €900 in materials alone.

Op, the stuff you describe is probably enamel paint. This is usually sold to paint tractors and machinery, etc.
The paint that other posters here are paying between €55 and €95 per lt is the newer water-based stuff (which also needs to be clear coated).
There is no reason why you can't paint your car with the paint you found at €15 per lt.
As it's enamel it won't need polishing or compounding when finished....the shine you get is as good as it gets:).
On a cheaper car it will be fine, in fact it will stick better than any other type of paint. The only issue is that you will only be able to cover it (i.e. any touch up jobs) with enamel again, as all other paints will react with it.

edit; if you do buy it make sure you get the right thinners for it.

Only if you want to pay that sort of money....

I have sprayed 4 or 5 classics (Mini's and MG's) with Cellulose and paint & thinners has always been in or around €50.

I don't want to pay that money but that's what it costs to get the best finish.

Usually it's knowhow and a bit of hard work that results in the better paint finish......regardless of which car you pick.

True, knowhow and hard work isn't cheap either. If you're going to the extent of finding a very good bodyshop/painter why would you let a car down in the final stages by using lower quality paint.

I don't see how the type of car comes into it?

When I mentioned type of car it was more of a generalisation that some people believe higher-end cars (Mercs and Beemers for example) need "special" paint.
As for lower quality paint...the stuff you buy nowadays is water-based and is probably the lowest quality paint that has been on the market for 50 years.
It may well be less toxic but it certainly is not anywhere near the quality that you would achieve with a 2-pack paint from 15 years ago.
Also as we do all our own mechanical and body work here at home (apart from the odd awkward job on a diesel Picasso) I can only relate to personal experience.
Spraying a car is not particularly difficult....it's the prep and a bit of experience that gets a good finish.
This is probably more aimed at those who want to do it themselves rather than yourself Neil. But really, you do not have to spend €900 on materials alone to get a great finish.

I'm fussy when it comes to paint finishes so I did a lot of research on who and what to use, hence no water based paints as I wanted the best finish I could get. All the prep is done on my car and it's just waiting for a nice coat of paint and lacquer :)

True it's all in the prep, I was amazed by the quality of work done on mine and it was just sitting in primer at that stage.

I learned that the hard way!

Well the way it is, the car was got cheap.and to be straight out and honest, i love it.im not in a position to be spending a savage amounrmt of money on the car, but there are some rough spots and the car is red.so the sun (when we got it) wasnt to friendly.all i really want to do is give the car a new lease of life but not tear a hole in my pocket.if i can get the car done, all in at around 200, and the job looks better than the way the car is, i cant see anything wrong with that.plus, its an old toyota.engine as strong as a tank :D
