FOI act and business

    Slightly odd question.

Myself and a colleague were idly discussing our workplace, wondering how much our big boss must be making. Another colleague chipped in saying it was possible under the FOI act to get access to the financial records for a company you were employed by, even if they aren't a PLC. Is this true? I was under the impression that private companies had no obligation to publish their accounts to anyone, and that FOI act was about accessing information from public bodies e.g. HSE.

If it is possible, how would I go about doing it?

    Thanks

I dont know about PLC companies, but LIMITED (LTD) companies must file annual accounts with the companies registration office (CRO.IE)

Anyone can download my, or any limited company reports, for a nominal charge, as it public information.

    See CRO.ie

Freedom of information Act only covers certain organisations full list here http://foi.gov.ie/bodies-covered-by-foi/

On the other hand Data Protection allows only access to your own data from pretty much anyone including your employer.

While company accounts will contain information they usually will not give the detail you require. There will be at best a global figure for wages per year and maybe a global figure for directors salary.
