I'm just wondering about this, is there a hard and fast rule ? I have a room that has 4 walls, 3 pink, one a red. I want to change it and paint 3 a lime green and the fourth white. So I'm wondering do the previous colours have much of an impact on weather or not 2 coats is necessary ?

Also is there a formula for calculating how much paint a job might take ? Litres per square metres or something ?

You should always give 2 coats when changing colour. That red wall thats going white will need 3.
You'll need 5 litres of each. Prob best to buy 10l of the white and paint the ceiling too and keep whats left for the next room, 5l of white costs about €20 and 10l about €30 maybe a bit less.

Yes, when changing colour at least two coats is the norm. When dealing with colours that have a lot of pigments in them, in your case reds and lime greens, often additional coats are required.

As for the spread rate, its usually around 14/15sqm per litre. However it can change for numerous reasons.

Impossible to tell how much paint you need with out dimensions. Good luck, hope the project goes well.
